Spring time for the housing market?

Commenting on Nationwide's figures reporting a surprise bounce in house prices, Louise Cuming, head of mortgages at moneysupermarket.com, said:

"Two recent green shoots of recovery mean it might just be spring time for the housing market. After seeing mortgage approvals for house purchases rise to 38,000 in February, we have now seen property prices increase by 0.9 per cent in March.

"Those waiting for the market to bottom out before making a move may now feel that time has come. So news such as this might prove to be the catalyst that gets the wheels of the mortgage industry turning again.

"There is always a need for caution when making predictions about the housing market. These figures may prove to be anomalous, but equally they may show that some measures taken by the Government and the Bank Of England have started to pay dividends. Only time will tell."
