Commenting on today's news that bmi will be removing fuel surcharges on flights within the UK and Europe, Bob Atkinson, travel expert at travelsupermarket.com, says:

"travelsupermarket.com welcomes the announcement today by bmi to cut all fuel surcharges on flights within the UK and Europe.  We are in the midst of a difficult economic climate and bmi passing on some of the cost savings following a recent drop in the price of crude oil to consumers will offer some help. "

"Moving forward, we hope to see bmi remove this from their long haul services as well.  British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have recently reduced their fuel charges along with a number of other airlines, which is great news for new bookers, although those who have already booked and not yet flown will still be paying the higher amounts.  Is that right for the customer?  We think not and call on carriers to refund the difference to passengers who are yet to fly."

"We urge all other airlines that have fuel supplements to remove these separate charges and to incorporate the cost of fuel within their base price.  This makes it clearer for customers when comparing prices and offers more transparency on the prices they are paying - a policy that Ryanair and Easyjet have offered consistently."
