Comment on the launch of Scottish Power's new Online Energy Saver 7 tariff

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com said: "With this new tariff, Scottish Power has manoeuvred itself as the cheapest energy provider out of the UK 'Big Six' at £975 per year on average.

"Not only this, but it also undercuts new entrant OVO Energy and now only lags behind First Utility in the price stakes as they maintain their hold on the cheapest tariff in the whole of the UK energy market.

"This really is welcomed news for customers looking to reign in their outgoings wherever possible in the current climate. With autumn nights drawing in and winter energy bills looming, any kind of saving is great for UK bill payers.

"It seems we now have a price war on our hands.  This strategic move from Scottish Power follows a cut earlier today to E.ON's Fix Online V3 offering; it should only be a matter of time before the other energy giants show their hands. We may see British Gas make a bold move to claim the top spot in the energy market. It really is a case of watch this space as this is potentially the tip of the iceberg with more attempts to claim the crown of the 'UK's Cheapest Energy Provider' to come."
