Scott Byrom, energy manager at moneysupermarket.com said: "It comes as no surprise that EDF Energy is increasing the cost of its energy tariffs after previously announcing before Christmas they would 'freeze' the cost of energy bills until March 2011.

"This change comes into effect on 2nd March with the standard price of electricity increasing by 7.5 cent and gas by 6.5 per cent. EDF Energy customers will now pay an average of £1,118 for standard dual fuel - an increase of £72. However, EDF Energy customers were shielded from the impact of rising energy costs at the most expensive time of the year as we experienced one of the coldest winters on record.

"Now all the Big Six energy giants have shown their hand, we would hope to see some stability in the UK energy market, which is reassuring for hard pressed consumers.  With the playing field now level it is a great opportunity for customers to evaluate the energy deals on offer and shop around to find the best product for their region and usage. Even though expensive winter energy bills are landing through letter boxes as we speak, switching to a cheaper and more suitable deal will enable consumers to offset some of their spend.

"The best value deals are online tariffs, with the cheapest on the market offered by EDF Energy. Its Online Saver v8 product would see anyone swapping from a standard tariff save at least £115.69.1 I advise anyone who has never changed their energy supplier to compare deals on offer as soon as possible to reduce the cost of their bills. Times are still tough and even though the warmer months are on the way, there is never a bad time to start saving money on your energy bills."
