Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com said: "This bold move will be welcomed by British bill payers, in one fell swoop E.ON has undercut big names like EDF Energy and British Gas to offer its FixOnline V3 tariff at £981.14  a year on average.

"However, this move by one of the traditional 'Big Six' providers has failed to challenge newcomers to the market, First Utility and OVO Energy, who hold the top two spots with their average bills sitting at £964.99 and £978.67 respectively. These smaller providers threw down the gauntlet from the off and have the most competitive deals in the market. With the battle lines drawn UK consumers face a choice of 'brand versus price' and will now have to decide what is more important.

"With the winter nights drawing in and energy consumption increasing, it is crucial Brits find the best energy deal for their region and usage. While E.ON is now the cheapest of the Big Six on average, Brits should be aware it is not the cheapest in all circumstances. The FixOnline V3 tariff is now cheapest in all 14 UK regions for a high consumption user, it takes top spot in 10 of the 14 regions for a medium user, but for the low users among us, EDF Online v5  is still the cheapest on average *. This further proves the importance of scouring the market to find the best deal for you."
