Take a stand against high call costs

Consumers have been paying too much for mobile phone calls for too long. Now is the time to take a stand and put pressure on providers to slash the amount they charge us.

Moneysupermarket.com is launching a new campaign, along with BT, mobile phone provider 3 and other partners to encourage people to sign the new 'Terminate the Rate Petition'.

You may not know this, but you are currently over paying for all the calls they make to a mobile phone from a fixed line or a mobile on a rival network because a Mobile Termination Rate (MTR) is charged to every minute of every call.

The MTR charge has always existed - is was initially applied to help grow the industry and allow providers to be competitive. The real cost of these charges is around 1p per minute, however, calls are currently subject to a charge closer to 5p per minute, meaning that consumers over pay by billions of pounds every year. The money generated through these calls goes straight in to the pockets of mobile providers and until now many consumers would never have known they were paying this extra cost as it isn't specified on monthly phone bills.

The Terminate the Rate campaign aims to make everyone aware of these charges and give you the opportunity to lobby the mobile industry to make call costs fairer for all and create a market that is more transparent and competitive.

For too long mobile providers have capitalised on this hidden charge and expected consumers to over pay for their calls. Moneysupermarket believes it is really unfair that everyone is penalised for making calls to friends and family on mobile phones. So join us by supporting this campaign and together we can hopefully bring about a change which will ensure you are charged fairly by your mobile phone provider. Sign the petition by registering your details at www.terminatetherate.org.
