Scottish Power is to reduce its gas and electricity prices at the end of March.

Five out of the six major energy providers have now announced prices reductions - npower is the only one yet to say its prices will fall.

Scottish Power will reduce its standard gas prices by 7.5%, while customers will see their electricity bills fall by an average of 3%. The new prices take effect on March 31.

British Gas customers on the provider's standard tariff saw their gas prices fall by an average of 10% February 19. As with Scottish Power, the tariff changes announced by the other major energy firms - EDF Energy, E.ON and Scottish & Southern Energy - don't take effect until the end of March.

Even though energy bills are set to fall, the price cuts won't cancel out the impact of last year's huge hikes. The average household saw its gas bill soar by 47% in 2008, while electricity costs rose by around 28%. Experts are therefore urging consumers to take action and switch tariff.

Around 50% of households have never changed energy provider, but by switching to an online deal and paying by monthly direct debit, there are potential savings of £200 or even £300 a year.

For many people, changing energy provider is one of the easiest ways to save money. Our comparison tool will enable you to identify the cheapest tariff base don your consumption and where in the country you live. You can then apply online and your new provider will arrange the transfer.
