Seventh day of Christmas
On the seventh day of Christmas moneysupermarket gave to me advice on how to avoid seven financial sins:
- don't renew with the same insurer - shop around, you'll probably get a better deal elsewhere;
- save energy and cut your fuel bills;
- pay bills by direct debit - you avoid late payment fees and protect your credit score;
- spread your savings - don't have more than £50,000 with a single institution;
- always repay more than the minimum on credit card debts;
- avoid using a credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM;
- don't buy travel money at the airport;
... six customer promises; five golden rules. Four reasons to go on holiday; three improved money channels; two enhanced insurance channels and an easy way to save time and money.
Eighth day of Christmas
On the eighth day of Christmas moneysupermarket gave to me eight ways to shop safely online:
- ensure your firewalls and anti-virus protection are up-to-date;
- stick to well known names;
- only use secure websites (look for a padlock symbol in the bottom corners of the browser window and check that the web address begins with 'https://');
- don't use the same password on every website you use;
- pay with a credit card - under the terms of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, the credit card company and retailer are jointly liable for purchases between £100 and £30,000;
- retain proof of purchases and check them against your bank and credit card statements;
- avoid leaving a trail - don't save credit card details online or save passwords on to your desktops;
- watch out for 'phishing' emails - your bank or credit card provider will never ask you to disclose your account details or password via email. If you receive such a request it will be from a fraudster.

Ninth day of Christmas
On the ninth day of Christmas moneysupermarket gave to me nine simple energy-saving measures:
put your heating on timer. Even over the Christmas period when you might be at home, don't be tempted to leave your heating on constantly. If you get cold, put an extra jumper on;
- turn your heating down by 1°C;
- have a shower rather than a bath;
- do your washing at 30°C;
- use energy efficient light bulbs and turn lights off when you leave the room (assuming no one else is in there);
- don't leave electrical appliances on standby - turn them off properly when they're not in use;
- boil less water - unless your making tea or coffee for the entire family, there's no need to fill the kettle;
- buy economical appliances. If you need a new washing machine, fridge or freezer, look for products that are A-rated;
- lag your water tank - a lagging jacket only costs around £15 but the heat it conserves could knock £30 a year off your bill.
