Newlywed couples are finding the costs of setting up home an uphill struggle, despite the fact that 87% of them say they paid off the cost of their wedding immediately, a survey has revealed.

Half of people said they ran into financial issues within the first 18 months of marriage as many couples are failing to plan for the costs.

The often unexpected financial strain is putting pressure on the relationship, one in 10 couples admitted.

Of those surveyed, 36% had to shell out money on decorating their homes, while the cost of major domestic appliances such as a washing machine or dishwasher was adding to the financial strain of one in four.

Around 31% of people said buying a property had stretched their finances, with 21% saying holidays had caused problems and 20% said the cost of having a baby after getting married led them into money difficulties.

Mark Huggins, head of AA Personal Loans, said: "The true cost of marriage is often underestimated by couples focussed on their wedding day and forgetting about the other financial demands the first 18 months of marriage can bring."
