Many households are about to face the harsh reality that if they don't shop around now for a better energy deal they will have a nasty bill shock once their fixed tariff deal ends.

Some customers on fixed tariffs with E.ON, British Gas and Scottish Power have already seen their deals come to an end so far this year with a total of 9 products expiring since January - and there's more to come.

A further 25 fixed tariff deals across all providers will come to an end before  the year is out, leaving many homes languishing on more expensive standard tariffs if they forget to shop around for a better deal.

If you are on a fixed deal but are unsure when it is about to end, check our table below:

Switch and save

With the average standard tariff currently sitting at £1,169 a year, you could save a substantial amount by shopping around. Online deals still offer the best prices with the average online tariff costing £899.64 - a saving of £270 per year.

However, the price you pay and the savings you could make depend on the area you live in and your annual consumption. For example, customers who are on a standard tariff with Scottish Power pay on average £1,289 per year. If they switched to the best online deal - which at present is npower's Sign Online 18 - they would pay £876, making an impressive saving of £413.

Most online deals aren't fixed but they are still a lot cheaper than the standard tariffs. If you feel that a fixed tariff gives you more piece of mind, then the best deal at the moment is Scottish Power's Online Energy Reward. Customers moving to this tariff will pay on average £898 per year - a saving of £271.

Moving to a better energy deal isn't as hard as you may think. By arming yourself with your most recent bill and using our energy price comparison tool, you stand to make yourself a big saving in minutes.
