EDF Energy joins the price rise race - but have you?

If npower's price rises one week ago were a warning sign, then EDF Energy's price hikes should be seen as clear proof that you can't afford to wait around any longer.

EDF Energy has taken the decision to increase its prices by 7.9% on electricity and 12.9% on gas - with the new prices coming into effect as of today (January 18).

The increases will have the biggest impact on customers in London, the South East and the South West where EDF Energy has close to three million customers - the bulk of which are on its standard tariff.

However, whether you're an EDF Energy customer or not, it would be costly to not take heed of the current market movements.

With two major providers having already hiked prices it's only a matter of time before the other four members of the 'big six' follow suit. In fact, a British Gas price rise has been on the cards for more than week now and most industry analysts are surprised that it is taking the company this long to implement changes.

If you're on a standard tariff with any of the big six providers, you must change to an online monthly direct debit deal as soon as possible to make savings.

For example, customers on npower's SOL8 tariff saw no price increase a week ago when npower raised its standard prices. However, the bad news is that SOL8 is no longer available for new customers - so it's only those who were quick enough to apply who will be laughing all the way to the bank.

So don't wait around - move now to the cheapest product in your area by searching with our gas and electricity comparison tool.

Though there are slight variations from region to region, for the majority of customers the cheapest tariff will be British Gas's Click Energy 4 deal. However, you must be quick because British Gas may stop taking applications for this deal soon.

Time is very much of the essence - so beat the providers to the punch and grab a cheap deal while you can.
