What is heating cover?

Heating cover provides you with the peace of mind if your heating system breaks down and helps avoid expensive repair bills to rectify problems with your boiler or heating system.

Why do I need heating cover?

Nobody wants to be without heating or hot water in the middle of winter and so to take out a heating cover product is a precautionary measure should the dreaded day ever arise. It also means that, should that day come, you can rest assured a qualified engineer will be able to fix the problem quickly and the call-out, parts and labour costs are already covered.

By not having a heating cover policy, you could face the dilemma of calling round local engineers in a mad panic and, as well as having to wait a few days for them to arrive, you are likely to face a much higher bill than the annual cost of taking out a policy.

What heating cover will suit me?

There are 2 main types of product available.

  • A service contract - includes an annual inspection and service.
  • An insurance product - an annual inspection and service may be added subject to an extra charge.

There is a difference in tax between these 2 products, service contracts are subject to VAT at 17.5%. The insurance products which are FSA regulated are subject to IPT (insurance premium tax) at 5%.

You will also need to decide if you want a product covering your full heating system or just for the boiler and controls. The boiler only product is usually cheaper but offers less cover.

All the various heating cover products vary by price, exclusions and the extent of cover. It is important to check what's covered when comparing prices.

Gas appliance care and maintenance

Don’t try to fix your heating system yourself unless you’re qualified. If you’re not, it’s better to call out someone who is CORGI registered.

To detect a problem at the earliest possible time, it may also be a good idea to purchase a CO detector.

FSA Regulated Products

The FSA regulates all products deemed as an Insurance policy.
