Caravan Insurance Guide
If you are a caravan owner, or are in the process of buying one, you should make finding a caravan insurance policy your top priority.
As with any vehicle on the roads in the UK, you will need to make sure you have adequate insurance cover in place to protect you for your liability towards 3rd parties and their property.
Caravan insurance will usually provide you with the following key features: new for old replacement, European cover, 3rd party/public liability cover, personal possession & equipment protection and a number of other covers depending on the insurer.
Let's take a look at the different options below:
Touring & Static Caravan Insurance
If you have a caravan which is towed behind your vehicle, or a static caravan located permanently at a caravan site, you can take out a standard caravan insurance policy which will insure you for either of these options.
The majority of caravan insurance policies provide cover for trips within the EU but may have time limits in place restricting you to a limited period of cover whilst abroad. Likewise, this policy type should provide you with cover for 3rd party liability which includes damage or injury to a 3rd party or their property.
Standard cover also usually features repair or replacement (on a like for like basis) should your caravan be damaged or stolen. Fixtures and fittings, personal items and stereos are all usually covered under this cover umbrella.
Motorhome Insurance
Motorhome insurance usually comes in 3 offerings: 3rd party, 3rd party fire and theft, and fully comprehensive. The basic cover level of 3rd party will pay out in the event of you damaging a 3rd parties vehicle or injuring them, but will not pay out for damage to your motorhome.
The next step up, 3rd party fire and theft, will provide just the same, but will also cover you should your motorhome be stolen or damaged by fire.
The remaining option, fully comprehensive cover, will usually incorporate all of the above, with the inclusion of covering you for damage to your motorhome and person in the event of an accident, plus a host of additional cover which varies from insurer to insurer.
Typical covers commonly offered with fully comprehensive motorhome insurance often include: new for old replacement, European cover, contents/equipment and windscreen/window cover.
Trailer Tent insurance
If you own a trailer tent or folding camper then you should choose a trailer tent policy. Cover features are usually similar to those of a touring caravan policy and should include; 3rd party liability, European cover, damage or replacement, etc.
Theft is not usually covered due to the lack of physical security measures in relation to trailer tents, but fixtures and fittings should be covered.
What Isn't Included
Common exclusions with caravan insurance are usually; wear & tear, use of a caravan or motorhome as a permanent residency, adequate security measures not in place, and vermin damage to trailer tents. Some motorhome insurance policies include breakdown but this is otherwise usually excluded.
