About Rolls Royce
Rolls-Royce is one of the oldest and most respected names in car production and engineering. Henry Royce built the first car in 1904 and agreed to manufacture a range of cars for Charles Rolls – thus Rolls-Royce was born. After the takeover of rival car maker Bentley back in the thirties, the cars produced under the Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands were, until 2002, often identical bar the radiator grille.
Everything changed in 1998 when VW bought Rolls-Royce after a prolonged battle of the cheque books with BMW. Rolls-Royce had decided to licence the name and logo to BMW – meaning VW lacked the rights to build cars under the Rolls-Royce brand and BMW lacked the iconic radiator grille. After much wrangling it was agreed that from 1st January 2003 BMW would only be able to name cars ‘Rolls-Royce’ and VW would only be able to build Bentleys.
