Do you remember the broadband providers NTL, Telewest and Virgin.net? Well now they have united under one umbrella - Virgin Media.

At its very formation, Virgin Media changed the broadband industry by becoming the very first internet service provider to offer quad play services. This means that it offers TV, broadband, phone and mobiles under one roof - and at the present time it remains the only UK provider to offer these four services.

Who is Virgin Media broadband ideal for?

Anyone looking to combine services into one simple monthly payment will be drawn towards the Virgin Media broadband range. In terms of its broadband only packages, size M will be sufficient for most users and unlimited downloads make it ideal for families. Those who want extra speed should consider paying more for either the broadband L or broadband XL package.

What do you need?

  • Virgin Media broadband can be accessed with either a fibre optic cable (on cable) or with a BT phone line (non cable).
  • A cable modem or router is required.
  • PC users require Windows 2000 pro or Windows XP.
  • Mac users require Mac OS 9.0+ (including OSX).

What else does Virgin Media have to offer?

The main attraction for Virgin Media is to combine services. Let’s take a look at their top of the range packages for each service area:

  • TV size XL - Includes more than 140 digital TV channels, Virgin TV on-demand and the V+ service.

Virgin TV on demand allows you to access more than 500 films (costing between £1.50 and £3.75 each time). The V+ service allows you to pause and rewind television or record two programmes while you watch a third.

  • Phone size XL - Includes unlimited anytime UK landline calls.
  • Virgin Mobile - A pay-as-you-go deal with up to 500 free texts and minutes along with a free 60mins airtime bonus if you take out one of the VIP packages.

Much will depend on your TV/phone/mobile habits as to which of these deals you opt for. However, with packages as low as 4 for £40 (the equivalent of £10 for each service) its clear there are large savings to be made and Sky has a true competitor in the TV/broadband sector.

Bad service at a wrong price

Broadband Ratings

Had Virgin Media broadband for about a month now in our student house, 50meg package due to the absence of a download limit. Initially noticed that the price advertised wasn't entirely accurate, and has now slowed to the extent that from opening iexplorer to writing this can take over five minutes. Youtube and iplayer almost impossible. Often crashes completely for hours at a time. Also when the first bill came, it turned out we had been charged £10pm more than signed for and the installation fee/deposit had doubled to £50. Fancy that? Tried to contact customer service online but no response after a week. I would thoroughly recommend avoiding Virgin, it is slower and more expensive than our copper wired 256kbps broadband at home in the Yorkshire Dales.

Avoid Virgin!!!!!

Broadband Ratings

Since I changed adress I had nothing but problems. Virgin broadband is completely unreliable and faulty. The worse thing is the customer care, Nobody knows what to say and it takes me at least 30 minutes of waiting to actually speak to somebody. usually they'll re-direct me to another department which takes another 30 minutes. This morning I requested the cancelation of the contract because the actual phone calls are costing more than the internet itself and I got 3 different quotes for the termination varying between £58 and £120 from 2 different departments in Virgin!!!! which one will I get? They are atrocious and very unprofessional. I would never chose or recommend Virgin again.

Not what it says on the tin!

Broadband Ratings

We've been a Virgin customer for about 2 years. The TV package is good (but a bit unreliable). The telephone package is quite good but also a bit unreliable. The broadband is very slow and unreliable. E-mail in particular fails at least once a month and goes at a snails pace. Customer care is a bit of a farce...they keep promising things (like a wireless router) which never arrive. Overall I'd have to say it's not worth the money...we'll be looking for a better deal.

Kick in the teeth

Broadband Ratings

I've been with Virgin for donkey's years and paid every bill on the dot by direct debit. I was, though, becoming worried by the rising bills each month (even £1.25) to get a a paper bill now! I run a small business and I'd soon lose my customers if I charged them to receive bills. Anyway, I'd been worried by the rising costs month on month. This month, the kids went mad on the phone and I got a bill of £238. The bill graciously said that the amount would be collected in the next dd/ Without any word of warning, they cut off my phone and bb, saying I'd exceeded some credit limit, I knew nothing about. I had to ring up and pay by card. Adios, Virgin

ultra bad cust service and tech support

been with virgin a while now, i must change to another provider. when i first joined i was promised a free wireless router, due to virgins own fault. this became like trying to get blood out of a stone, i even told them to play there taped phone calls back i was nearly in tears. one person would say one thing another saying another, no records seem to be kept. when you keep having to phone up, usualy the person you talk to can neither speak englisgh or understand it. been having alot of trouble loosing my wireless connection, and after being passed from person to person to person, eatch one telling me id got the wrong place and putting me on hold. was finaly told i had a problem with my wireless card, had this looked at and it was o.k, was charged £55 for something virgin should have done
