Do you remember the broadband providers NTL, Telewest and Virgin.net? Well now they have united under one umbrella - Virgin Media.

At its very formation, Virgin Media changed the broadband industry by becoming the very first internet service provider to offer quad play services. This means that it offers TV, broadband, phone and mobiles under one roof - and at the present time it remains the only UK provider to offer these four services.

Who is Virgin Media broadband ideal for?

Anyone looking to combine services into one simple monthly payment will be drawn towards the Virgin Media broadband range. In terms of its broadband only packages, size M will be sufficient for most users and unlimited downloads make it ideal for families. Those who want extra speed should consider paying more for either the broadband L or broadband XL package.

What do you need?

  • Virgin Media broadband can be accessed with either a fibre optic cable (on cable) or with a BT phone line (non cable).
  • A cable modem or router is required.
  • PC users require Windows 2000 pro or Windows XP.
  • Mac users require Mac OS 9.0+ (including OSX).

What else does Virgin Media have to offer?

The main attraction for Virgin Media is to combine services. Let’s take a look at their top of the range packages for each service area:

  • TV size XL - Includes more than 140 digital TV channels, Virgin TV on-demand and the V+ service.

Virgin TV on demand allows you to access more than 500 films (costing between £1.50 and £3.75 each time). The V+ service allows you to pause and rewind television or record two programmes while you watch a third.

  • Phone size XL - Includes unlimited anytime UK landline calls.
  • Virgin Mobile - A pay-as-you-go deal with up to 500 free texts and minutes along with a free 60mins airtime bonus if you take out one of the VIP packages.

Much will depend on your TV/phone/mobile habits as to which of these deals you opt for. However, with packages as low as 4 for £40 (the equivalent of £10 for each service) its clear there are large savings to be made and Sky has a true competitor in the TV/broadband sector.

Lot of money - poor service

Broadband Ratings

I started with NTL and then continued with Virgin Media. Upgraded to the VIP package which included the XL Broadband. TV and phone excellent butfrom around end September 2008 to July 2009, we had very slow or no internet. Countless phone calls to the scripted customer service team did not solve the problem. They always, said disconnect the modem from the router, put it direct to the PC because it must be your router that is a problem. Funny, still did not work direct to pc. Speed tests showed that it was a traffic problem. Now, we have different problem, internet disconnects on a regular basis. We have brought a new router, they say it is us. We know it is there fault. Finally a technician is coming to visit. Refunding us a whole 5.00 for internet loss. Whoopy doo!

Terrible service

Broadband Ratings

So in short I moved existing broadband to new address - router and modem work fine, all activated - local connection only - no internet. Cue 9 days of trying to get through to tech support. Customer services repeatedly checked that my lights were all fine - I need to talk to tech support to find out why my internet isn't working. Nine days of trying to get through to be cut off. Every time. Even when the customer services person stays on the line to transfer me. All on my mobile, because the earliest they can fit my cable phone line is 3 weeks away. So far £50 phone bill and growing. I called them from work to try and sort it out - they can't help unless I'm at home. But they can't help when I am at home because they cut me off every time. Then she hung up on me. Cancelling tonight

Appalling in every direction

Broadband Ratings

Sadly your rating bars do not seem to allow one to enter less than 1/10, whereas in every category I should like to record a very large negative number! A costly TV service which provides less than the standard number of channels available free through the ether! A quite atrocious and very costly phone service that malfunctioned for many months, ringing the phone continuously (i.e. not "ring, ring", in the traditional UK fashion, but CONSTANTLY) at three or four o'clock in the morning! And a SLOW and faulty broadband service (so much for "superior" fibre optics!) c/w a poor e-mail carrying capacity that is way too small for my purposes! Finally, Virgin Customer Service is a splendid mega - frustrating, unintelligible, and quite pointless, joke! Minus 100 in all areas!

No problems but nothing special

Added 04/11/2009, reviewed by Clive (Bristol)

Broadband Ratings

Virgin for me has ben exactly that... nothing special but does the job. I currently have the broadband and phone package and apart from calls trying to get my to sign up for the TV deal, the customer service has been ok. I have had no major problems, one occasion of being told that a discount was about to be removed from my account (as it had finished) only to be told by someone else that it wouldnt. I pay by direct debit and billing is available online so I am quite happy with that. No problems tends to suggest good reliability and without a working knowledge of exactly how fast 10MB is... when i am on the internet it seems to move pretty fast!
