Tiscali was formed in January 1998 and is thought to be named after a small village in Sardinia. However, there was nothing small about its internet operation which attracted vast interest when it entered the market and has expanded to be the fourth most popular broadband service in all of the UK.

One of the reasons Tiscali broadband has been able to grow is because it has met changing consumer demands by merging broadband with phone services and most recently introducing a television deal. On top of all this, Tiscali has remained one of the most economical providers around and offers some of the most cost-effective monthly deals on broadband-only and, at the time of its launch, the broadband, phone and TV deal was the cheapest in the UK.

Who is Tiscali broadband ideal for?

The beauty of these Tiscali broadband deals is that all download capacities are unlimited* meaning your choice is based on the speed you require. The 8Mb deals are best for those who want a little extra. There are large savings to be made by picking a bundle deal, particularly if you take advantage of one of the TV packages which are currently the cheapest in the UK.

What do you need?

To set up your Tiscali broadband connection you will receive a Tiscali installation pack - which includes the following for free:

  • A broadband modem.
  • Two broadband micro filters with RJ11 cable to connect to your broadband filter.
  • USB data cable to connect to your computer.
  • CD installation software.
  • Set-up instructions.

So all you will need is a phone line supplied by BT.

What else does Tiscali have to offer?

Tiscali does offer 'extra' broadband deals for 8Mb packages. These come with added features such as 500Mb of storage space and 150Mb of webspace. However, for the majority of users, the regular deals will be best as they are less expensive and cover most user needs.

The Tiscali TV deals are attracting a lot of interest in the broadband market currently as they include innovative technology such as on-demand programming and the FX catch-up service. There is plenty to enjoy on the on-demand service too including well-established programmes such as Dr Who, Friends, Casualty and more. The TV variety pack incorporates channels such as Sky One, Paramount and ITV2.

What Customer Service?

Broadband Ratings

I have been trying to upgrade my 1.1mb broadband to something faster plus phone line package since last December. When I checked the progress on line it advised me that an upgrade/downgrade was running. Several months later spent a fortune on calls to Indian Call Center, can't get any sense out of them all they do is wish me a wonderful day! Technical & other departments fob me off. Why do they spend all this money on TV adverts? The worst customer service for any company I have ever had dealings with. Avoid Tiscali at all costs

Run a mile if you want decent service

I have had very poor customer service from Tiscali and Im desperately trying to leave them.....please Tiscali give me my MAC code! Go with tiscali If you are happy waiting in a queue for 30 mins at a time for customer service (all at 5p a min). Then you get to talk to someone who just can't help and who you can barely understand Be wary about being put on hold too - you end up right at the start of the queue again. When they finally get around to phoning you back, guess what? They leave a message with no direct return number, so you are back at the start of that blumin queue again not knowing which option to pick and having no prospect whatsoever getting in touch with the person who left the message. ps does everyone else with tiscali get silent calls too?

Rubbish Service and Customer Service

I was with Homechoice that became Tiscali. When I moved to Tiscali it was nothing but problems. I must have gone through at least 4 separate boxes over 6 months. The screen kept on freezing and I would go for 3 weeks out of 4 with no service at all. (they still charge you for the full month of course). When you ring customer service (thats an interesting term for them) you will have to wait 15-20 minutes to have your call answered. In the end I gave up and moved to O2. That was back in March 08. I got my IMAC off Tiscali and was told I had to do nothing else. Yeah right. Of course I am still getting bills for previous months even when I repeatedly ring them and they tell me it is being sorted and to expect a refund. They won't give you accounts to ring direct. AVOID at all costs.

Dreadful customer service

Added 12/05/2008, reviewed by anonymous (Neath)

Broadband Ratings

I had numerous difficulties with Tiscali at the start of the year. I had bought a laptop and wanted to set up an existing broadband account on the laptop. I don't know much about computers etc, so I was relying upon the customer service advisor to help me. It took 5 very long phone calls over a period of approx. 2 months to get my broadband set up on the laptop, simply because the customer service centre did not know how to help me. The problem was rectified by a competent person but it took several attempts to get there. Very frustrating! They did however, give me some money off the next bill to recompense me for the expense of the 0870 calls. Poor service, wouldn't bother again.
