Prior to TalkTalk's 'free broadband' offer in 2006, broadband was comparatively expensive with many internet users remaining on dial-up. However, the free broadband deal prompted thousands of surfers to make their move - so many in fact, that TalkTalk, part of the Carphone Warehouse group, struggled to cope with the level of interest and services suffered as a result.

Now however, TalkTalk has re-established itself. It has won back customers by earning recognition for the quality of its service and it remains one of the cheapest providers around.

  • Its deals are based on users moving their phone services over to the company. If you do that, then the TalkTalk broadband is 'free'.

Who is Talk Talk broadband ideal for?

The choice with TalkTalk is not based on broadband - both deals are the same from a broadband perspective. Instead, choosing a TalkTalk package should be based on your phone usage with Talk International Anytime slightly more expensive based as you can make calls all day long for the fixed fee. Plus landline calls are also free between TalkTalk customers at any time.

What do you need?

  • You must have a BT landline - it is not available to cable customers.
  • You will need a USB modem or router - a free wired modem is available with the TalkTalk packages and a wireless router can be bought from the company at £20.
  • PC users will need Windows 98 or higher, while Mac users require 8/9 or higher or Mac OSX.

What else does Talk Talk have to offer?

You can have your wireless router set up by the Geek Squad for a cost of just £9.99 - a welcome boost for anyone who is uncomfortable with computers.

There is also a 30day trial offer meaning that you can simply cancel your chosen package if you are not happy with it as long as you do so within 30 days.

This certainly removes the element of risk from signing up to a TalkTalk contract. TalkTalk has responded favourably to criticism of its service after the explosion of interest surrounding its free broadband offer in 2006. Many customers who were perhaps frustrated with the company at that point should feel encouraged to give the provider another chance after it scooped a number of industry awards and with its 30day trial offer effectively giving you a 'get-out' clause if you're not happy.

This is a welcome reassurance from a provider that is battling back with excellent deals and good service.

Great service - No problems

I have been with talk talk now for about 6 months. I changed to their free broadband package with my landline phone service and have found no problems with either the connection or the speed.

Broadband Ratings

I have been with TT since last July and have another 7 months to go before I can end my contract. I had just my phone calls with TT and that was great, then changed over to Broadband, I think it was okay for a while but now it is horrendous, I can hardly get my modem to connect, if the phone rings, this cuts off the modem connection. Basically I am paying for a service which TT are clearly not providing. Also my sky digital has become effected I judt don't know which way to turn. If I cancel I will have to pay £70 cancellation fee, and have the hassle of having no phone-line which means no TV because sky digital will be effected due to the landline. No internet access either. The customer service is terrible. Do not bother! Its a shame because they were ok once!

happy with talktalk

Broadband Ratings

I am quite happy with TalkTalk and have been with them for my phone line for years. I find the International/Broadband package I am on is perfect for my needs and very cheap. The broad band speed is not very good for me, however this is due to my location rather than TalkTalk. I am connected to the internet everytime I try and am never cut off. My only complaint is the difficulty in getting a problem resolved by phoning customer services. The staff are polite, but difficult to understand and that is if you can actually get through to someone. I never want to hear their "hold" music again! However, I haven't needed to contact customer services since I had a small problem with installation as I've since had no problems.

I switched to TalkTalk as a mate was moving to Ireland. I wanted to stay in touch without having to worry about the oost of the calls. I had heard bad things about TalkTalk's broadband, however I had a VirginMedia broadband so it didn't worry me if it turned out badly. What a surprise! Not only is my phone bill tiny, averaging £20 a month, all in. Calls are excellent quality. I can call my mate at any time for free. The broadband service is very reliable and fast. Technical support via the beta TalkTalkmembers site has been superb. I cannot fault TalkTalk's service, but one criticism - I do feel that forcing a new 18 month contract to be started at every contract alteration is excessive... I am dumping VirginMedia'a £18 a month 2 meg broadband at the earliest opportunity.

I Would thoroughly recommend talktalk

Broadband Ratings

Apart from a mix up with charges when I joined at the end of June which were quickly sorted out I have no cause for complaint about talktalk. I am getting speeds up to 7mb on the LLU service despite using an extension cable. I am using the supplied Smart AXMT882 router and it has never let me down yet. My connection has only dropped twice in 9 months and a quick call to Technical Support sorted it out, and that was before I started using the supported modem. They have an excellent members' web site where staff up to the level of the CEO's office give excellent technical support not to forget the ordinary members who deserve praise for their exemplary efforts! I intend staying with talktalk for as long as I have broadband service!
