Prior to TalkTalk's 'free broadband' offer in 2006, broadband was comparatively expensive with many internet users remaining on dial-up. However, the free broadband deal prompted thousands of surfers to make their move - so many in fact, that TalkTalk, part of the Carphone Warehouse group, struggled to cope with the level of interest and services suffered as a result.

Now however, TalkTalk has re-established itself. It has won back customers by earning recognition for the quality of its service and it remains one of the cheapest providers around.

  • Its deals are based on users moving their phone services over to the company. If you do that, then the TalkTalk broadband is 'free'.

Who is Talk Talk broadband ideal for?

The choice with TalkTalk is not based on broadband - all deals are the same from a broadband perspective. Instead, choosing a TalkTalk package should be based on your phone usage with Talk Global Anytime slightly more expensive based as you can make calls all day long for the fixed fee. Plus landline calls are also free between TalkTalk customers at any time.

What do you need?

  • You must have a BT landline - it is not available to cable customers.
  • You will need a USB modem or router - a free wired modem is available with the TalkTalk packages and a wireless router can be bought from the company at £20.
  • PC users will need Windows 98 or higher, while Mac users require 8/9 or higher or Mac OSX.

What else does Talk Talk have to offer?

You can have your wireless router set up by the Geek Squad for a cost of just £9.99 - a welcome boost for anyone who is uncomfortable with computers.

There is also a 30day trial offer meaning that you can simply cancel your chosen package if you are not happy with it as long as you do so within 30 days.

This certainly removes the element of risk from signing up to a TalkTalk contract. TalkTalk has responded favourably to criticism of its service after the explosion of interest surrounding its free broadband offer in 2006. Many customers who were perhaps frustrated with the company at that point should feel encouraged to give the provider another chance after it scooped a number of industry awards and with its 30day trial offer effectively giving you a 'get-out' clause if you're not happy.

This is a welcome reassurance from a provider that is battling back with excellent deals and good service.

AVOID TALK TALK

Broadband Ratings

The 10 mins that I spent in Carphone Warehouse changing to Talk Talk has been the worst experience ever. Customer Service is something that they don't understand the meaning of! I was only with them for a day then took the 30day 'cooling off' since then I have spent 2 hours on the phone trying to sort credits etc for a service that I have never used. 3 months later I am still receiving calls from Debt Collecting agencies!!! The strap line on thier bill envelopes say 'Relax, this bill's from the phone company voted best value for money - I don't think so. DO NOT JOIN TALK TALK!

Poor customer service

Broadband Ratings

Generally talktalk broadband is reliable but if you have a problem there are two major issues. Firstly the support staff have very strong accents whichh I have found required me to ask them to repeat themselves a lot (this is embarrassing as well as annoying). Secondly they are very limited in their knowledge. However, the second issue is sales. They call to offer extra services, minimise the cost then still add on services that you have made it clear that you dont want. When I complained they refunded that months additional charge but did not remove the services. Next month I had to go through the same process again. I saw the MD on TV denying that they did this. I can assure you it is common practice.

It's cheap for a reason

Broadband Ratings

I left TalkTalk after about 18 months of wrangling. I was charged for 6 months of service that I didn't recieve, on the basis that my household wiring was insufficient to support the service they were providing!! Technical support in Scotland were amazing but I had to learn the shortcuts and times to ring to get through to them. The overseas call centres were useless and very difficult to understand - I got the feeling that phonecalls to them were mutually frustrating as they had to follow scripts meaning average phonecall was 15 - 20 mins to get to the point we'd been the day before. They continued to bill and deny there was a problem until I wrote to Chairman and OFCOM. Eventually recieved a refund and free cancellation and apology. Still get their junk mail. Steer clear!!

ordered phone & broadband 11th august, now 15th october, after 2 macs from previous provider still no broadband. Non existant customer service, dont respond to emails, kept on hold forever (your call is important to us blah blah blah) untill your arm gets numb or you fall to sleep. when eventually you might be lucky enough to speak to an actual human being, in gods knows where that you cant understand! you get absolutley nowhere.wouldn't touch this lot with a barge pole, be warned.
