Prior to TalkTalk's 'free broadband' offer in 2006, broadband was comparatively expensive with many internet users remaining on dial-up. However, the free broadband deal prompted thousands of surfers to make their move - so many in fact, that TalkTalk, part of the Carphone Warehouse group, struggled to cope with the level of interest and services suffered as a result.

Now however, TalkTalk has re-established itself. It has won back customers by earning recognition for the quality of its service and it remains one of the cheapest providers around.

  • Its deals are based on users moving their phone services over to the company. If you do that, then the TalkTalk broadband is 'free'.

Who is Talk Talk broadband ideal for?

The choice with TalkTalk is not based on broadband - both deals are the same from a broadband perspective. Instead, choosing a TalkTalk package should be based on your phone usage with Talk International Anytime slightly more expensive based as you can make calls all day long for the fixed fee. Plus landline calls are also free between TalkTalk customers at any time.

What do you need?

  • You must have a BT landline - it is not available to cable customers.
  • You will need a USB modem or router - a free wired modem is available with the TalkTalk packages and a wireless router can be bought from the company at £20.
  • PC users will need Windows 98 or higher, while Mac users require 8/9 or higher or Mac OSX.

What else does Talk Talk have to offer?

You can have your wireless router set up by the Geek Squad for a cost of just £9.99 - a welcome boost for anyone who is uncomfortable with computers.

There is also a 30day trial offer meaning that you can simply cancel your chosen package if you are not happy with it as long as you do so within 30 days.

This certainly removes the element of risk from signing up to a TalkTalk contract. TalkTalk has responded favourably to criticism of its service after the explosion of interest surrounding its free broadband offer in 2006. Many customers who were perhaps frustrated with the company at that point should feel encouraged to give the provider another chance after it scooped a number of industry awards and with its 30day trial offer effectively giving you a 'get-out' clause if you're not happy.

This is a welcome reassurance from a provider that is battling back with excellent deals and good service.

Never use TalkTalk

Broadband Ratings

TalkTalk have been my call provider for over 2 years - was an original One-tel customer. Ordered TalkTalk international - means they have to take over line rental from BT & broadband on 11 April 2008, received confirmation on 15 April 2008. Also received acknowledgment of transfer from BT. On 19 April 2008 received letter from TalkTalk saying they had received request to transfer my service and they were treating it as a disconnection. Nobody in TalkTalk could help. Ofcom said re-order. Did & order was not confirmed. On checking told line dis-connected. BT had taken it. BT say Talk Talk have it. Ofcom advise - go to another supplier. Nobody is interested in helping. Have ordered service from Sky - hope this works!

TalkTalk....The no bill company

Added 12/05/2008, reviewed by anonymous (Goddard)

Broadband Ratings

Switched to TT a couple of months ago to take broadband and phone. Last months total to pay was different to what showed on screen summary to what it was when i called to pay. This month again the amount differed. In these 2 months i haven't received a bill notification via email so only have my online summary and when i call billing to question the amounts they can't give me an explanation. I spoke to my bank about this who knew who i was talking about before i'd even mentioned the company name. Apparently this is a common billing error with TT. Apart from that bad customer service and billing, connection was easy, I get a great speed and haven't lost connection once at all.

A Life Changing Experience

Added 12/05/2008, reviewed by David Horne (Redruth)

Broadband Ratings

The service has to be experienced to be believed. The 1st line technical support exhaust their technical knowledge by answering the phone. I'm sure it must have taken extensive training to achieve such poor customer service, no one could be that bad naturally. Having established they can do nothing for you, or anyone else I should think, they then validate your number which enables you to ring 2nd line technical support. They are a little better and do try but when I had to ring back I discovered that my number was no longer validated so was re-directed back to 1st line technical support. I was off line for over 2 weeks and never got a satisfactory explanation as to what had gone wrong. I spent a total of 12 hours on the phone being shunted between 1st & 2nd line technical support.

Great service - No problems

Added 07/05/2008, reviewed by anonymous (Chester)

Broadband Ratings

I have been with talk talk now for about 6 months. I changed to their free broadband package with my landline phone service and have found no problems with either the connection or the speed.
