When it comes to shaking up an industry, Sky could be seen as one of the leaders in the field. Its influence on television and digital services in the UK has been extensive - and now it has taken that super-power status into the world of broadband.

It's no surprise then that Sky broadband has helped to revolutionise what we expect from our internet service and it offers some of the best bundled deals in the market.

In addition, Sky offers its 'See, Surf and Speak' range which allows you to combine broadband, TV and phone services - these are available to people who are willing to sign up to Sky TV.

Who is Sky broadband ideal for?

If you're considering becoming a Sky TV customer you can make massive savings by signing up to one of these Sky broadband deals. The various See, Surf and Speak mixes are huge money savers and are among the most competitive convergence deals around with the bonus of having Sky's complete television service to choose from.

What do you need?

  • A compatible BT phone line.
  • PC users: A spare Ethernet port; 100Mb of hard drive space; 64Mb RAM or higher; 133MHz or higher and Windows 2000 or a higher version.
  • Mac users: A spare Ethernet port; a processor - 266MHz Power PC G3 or higher; OS X v10.2.6 (Jaguar) or higher; 128Mb of RAM.

What else does Sky have to offer?

There are lots of extras with Sky broadband including a wireless router worth more than £50, a free 12 months subscription to McAfee internet security suite and dedicated 24/7 support. You can also choose between free self-installation and professional home installation for £50.

Sky broadband is unquestionably one of the leaders in the broadband 'bundle' market. Customers who already have Sky TV have the incentive to add-on broadband at money-saving prices, while non-customers who are interested in Sky can make massive savings by merging all three services (phone, broadband, TV) under one roof. These deals are proof of how far the broadband industry has moved in favour of the consumer.

Don't touch them with a barge pole

The Sky service is appalling. The download speed is excruciatingly slow (0.11 mbps!!!) and the overseas help centre is absolutely useless - they are all very polite but can resolve nothing. After spending hours and hours on the phone to them (at my cost) and doing everything they have suggested, incuding new modem/router etc the speeds have still not improved. I know its not the line because the broadband with my previous ISP was super-fast. You can't get to speak to anybody with any knowledge or sense, just very nice people in the Philippines, who do not have the technical skills. I am counting the days until my minimum 12 month period with them is up.

I got Sky broadband in sept 06. After all this time I still havent had a whole week of continuos broadband. I constantly ring them. That costs me a fortune. They still dont know what the problem is after doing this that and the other. Maybe one day ill get what I wanted. But apart from that,I do think they are ok as I do alot of downloading and they havent said a thing.

Sky are utterly useless

Requested Sky "See, Speak & Surf" at the beginning of May. It's now June and they still don't have my correct home number, despite several phone calls to them. I didn't realise everything would have to be organised individually, in painfully slow steps! My first phone call when I asked for "See, speak & surf" I was told "no problem", I thought great, how easy is this. But, you have to call them to get the box installed, then you have to call them to get broadband connection, then you have to call them twice to get Sky talk and I still don't have Sky talk and I have been given different advice every time I call. I don't have enough room here to continue my rant against Sky!

Sky's the limit !

A complete and utter waste of time and money. I've lost count of the number of times I've tried to speak with their laughably called 'Tech Support'. My broadband connection (if it can be called that) connects and disconnects at will. Every attempt at finding the problem yet alone fixing it, is akin to a 'Groundhog Day' moment - you never get to speak to the same person twice, no one, but no one will accept any kind of responsibility for the problem, and to add insult to injury you have to phone at your own cost - I fail to see how they can get away with that kind of service. Not only am I finally terminating my contract but I am seriously considering terminating my Sky TV contract as well. Avoid like the plague............

Better than I expected...

Added 30/05/2008, reviewed by anonymous (Carrickfergus)

Broadband Ratings

I have just switched to Sky after one year with Virgin Media. Comparing the speed, Sky provided twice faster connection than Virgin from the first day. Now it has been getting faster, though I have not received 8 Mb, yet far faster than Virgin (between 3 and 6 Mb so far, Virgin provided usually 1.5 Mb sometimes less than 400 Kb, instead of the advertised 8Mb!). They (Sky) sent me a letter to be activated on 22nd of May and the connection was active on that day! I had only one problem: the first router was faulty so I had to phone the technical support. Now it seems they are better, above my expectations, so fingers crossed.
