With so many cheap broadband deals available, it's difficult to find one without a long-term contract that still lives up to expectations.

But what if you could secure cheap broadband without the risk of being stuck in a contract? Well now you can, as one provider has launched a new range of affordable products that do not force you into a long-term contract.

The provider in question is PlusNet - one of the oldest internet service providers in the country, and one that is built on a solid customer reputation. For those of you unfamiliar with the provider, the PlusNet brand was actually launched back in 1997 but was bought out by BT Retail towards the end of 2006.

The PlusNet name was kept because it had such an outstanding reputation. But the products have now been redefined to place more emphasis on convergence and improved customer support.

Who is PlusNet broadband ideal for?

PlusNet broadband products are ideal for users that want a fast and reliable service without contractual commitments.

PlusNet Option One is a pay-as-you-go product that suits the occasional user who will reap rewards for not being tied into a fixed cost. PlusNet Option Two is ideal for the regular internet user whereas Options Three and Four offer additional advantages such as bigger download capacities for very heavy users.

What do you need?

  • A BT phone line.
  • A USB modem or a wireless router.
  • PC users need Windows Millennium 2000 or above. Mac users require 8/9 or higher, or Mac OSX.

What else does PlusNet have to offer?

In addition to its broadband internet services, PlusNet has a number of home phone deals that can be tied to the broadband packages. For example, the home phone anytime deal allows the user to cover the cost of calls to UK landlines and the top 20 international destinations, including line rental. If tied to a broadband package, the PlusNet customer will receive just one combined monthly bill.

What’s interesting about these products is not only the choice - the deals are also clear and transparent. These aren't unlimited offers with strict 'fair use' policies - these deals tell you how much you can download and let you pick the right option for you.

For so many users cheap broadband deals have been overshadowed by poor customer service and problems when attempting to change to new products. Now this risk has been removed - and for that, PlusNet broadband products get the thumbs-up.

Best I have ever used..

and i have used many isp's... Anytime of the day, if i test my speed on speedtest.net, i get a minimum of 5Mb. Always a low ping for gaming as well. Even at, say, 7pm i can download a 700Mb movie in around 24minutes. I can't believe some of the bad reviews i have read here. My experience is that they have given me the most reliable and consistent internet connection i have ever had in over 10 years online. Lol, no i don't work for them!! The only complaint i have is that 15GB is no longer enough for 4 of us online in a month. Its free to download after midnight and before 8am.. but my eldest forgets and downloads too much... time to change to unlimited i think!

Great billing for dreadful service

Added 15/10/2009, reviewed by anonymous (London)

Broadband Ratings

I've been with plusnet now for years. Since BT took over, they have gone down hill. I've had trouble with my broadband speed now for over a month and still not resolved. I've changed my phone, my filter, cabling and yet they still give me different advice on every call I make to them. Personally I'd consider someone else next time.

hopeless speed

Added 06/10/2009, reviewed by anonymous (London)

Broadband Ratings

Even though apparently my line supports 2.5Mb/sec I have never seen anything above 1.3Mb/sec, usually in the evenings the speed is around 0.4Mb - 0.7Mb which makes surfing the web annoying not mentioning any downloads. The peer-to-peer file sharing is restricted with Traffic Shaping which limits your downloads to 100kb/sec (15 kB) in the evenings and 256kb (30kB) at night. I know it is cheap but come on - you don't advertise something that have 'Lightening speed of up to 8MB' if you only deliver less than 1/10 of it. And you are bound to the contract of 18 months...

No customer service response on 0845

Added 25/09/2009, reviewed by anonymous (Solihull)

Broadband Ratings

Joined after reading customer service record was good. Initially it was. Speed has dropped off and after trying to speak to a customer service representative I have now spent a total of 12 hours 17 minutes (over many days) on an 0845 which I am paying for and not yet spoken to a human being. Just the "your call is very important and we are experiencing a heavy demand at the moment". PlusNet have gone from being one of the best to one of the worst. I feel this company is going the way of Tiscali!

Internet Keeps Dropping

Added 20/09/2009, reviewed by Kevin (Egham)

Broadband Ratings

I have been with Plusnet since July 2009 and have to first of all that their customer service is outstandingly amazing and whey exceeded my expectations. However ever since I have had Plusnet the internet drop's all the time and is becoming more and more frequent to the point where I can no longer use the internet for longer than 10 minutes. Plusnet have done all their checks and even sent a BT Engineer out who still couldn't find out why the internet keeps dropping. I have asked Plusnet to cancel my broadband and provide me with a MAC code - I will post back on here what happened. I did like the fact that you could raise any concerns online via a ticket, and that after you called them you can see what was discussed and outcome online.
