With so many cheap broadband deals available, it's difficult to find one without a long-term contract that still lives up to expectations.

But what if you could secure cheap broadband without the risk of being stuck in a contract? Well now you can, as one provider has launched a new range of affordable products that do not force you into a long-term contract.

The provider in question is PlusNet - one of the oldest internet service providers in the country, and one that is built on a solid customer reputation. For those of you unfamiliar with the provider, the PlusNet brand was actually launched back in 1997 but was bought out by BT Retail towards the end of 2006.

The PlusNet name was kept because it had such an outstanding reputation. But the products have now been redefined to place more emphasis on convergence and improved customer support.

Who is PlusNet broadband ideal for?

PlusNet broadband products are ideal for users that want a fast and reliable service without contractual commitments.

PlusNet Option One is a pay-as-you-go product that suits the occasional user who will reap rewards for not being tied into a fixed cost. PlusNet Option Two is ideal for the regular internet user whereas Options Three and Four offer additional advantages such as bigger download capacities for very heavy users.

What do you need?

  • A BT phone line.
  • A USB modem or a wireless router.
  • PC users need Windows Millennium 2000 or above. Mac users require 8/9 or higher, or Mac OSX.

What else does PlusNet have to offer?

In addition to its broadband internet services, PlusNet has a number of home phone deals that can be tied to the broadband packages. For example, the home phone anytime deal allows the user to cover the cost of calls to UK landlines and the top 20 international destinations, including line rental. If tied to a broadband package, the PlusNet customer will receive just one combined monthly bill.

What’s interesting about these products is not only the choice - the deals are also clear and transparent. These aren't unlimited offers with strict 'fair use' policies - these deals tell you how much you can download and let you pick the right option for you.

For so many users cheap broadband deals have been overshadowed by poor customer service and problems when attempting to change to new products. Now this risk has been removed - and for that, PlusNet broadband products get the thumbs-up.

A service in decline

Broadband Ratings

I've been with Plusnet for many years. I used to rave how great they were but recently, I've seen a change that has prompted me to look elsewhere. Yes, their technical support is outstanding, but I'm not impressed by the rather arrogant attitude from their sales staff. I've been on Easy Start for many years and have been paying a whopping £25 p/mnth for what I considered at the time to be an excellent product. Sadly, they are unable to justify why their recent accounts offer so much more for up to £10 less and yet they have only this month informed me of the better products. Surely a company who wishes to keep their customers should keen you informed and not to tell you "It's your fault if you don't check!" Sorry Plus Net - I think you've just lost a loyal customer!

Been with them for dialup & email for years, now upgraded to option1 broadband with no problems at all - good communication and everything happened exactly when it was supposed to. I'm only 1/4 mile away from exchange and get nearly 7mb/s consistently. Technical support system is excellent and holds history of all events and changes to your account so you know exactly where you are. No setup fee so long as you stay with them for 12 months which is fair enough. If you need more than the 1gb download allowance in a particular month or continuously you can freely increase or decrease as required or just set it to PAYG and only 8am to midnight is counted as overnight downloads are free. At £9.99 (for 1gb - 74p for each extra 1gb) I can highly recommend Plusnet.

Brilliant fair-use policy, good service

They count traffic only during peak hours, which means you can leech all night long as much as you want. Customer service is ok. Response time is ok and responses are competent. They keep log of your previous e-mails/tickets, so you don't have to explain the same thing over and over again to every rep. (unlike with BT!)

Recommended ISP

I've been using PlusNet for the last 4 or 5 years - have moved house from one end of the country to another and still went back to using PlusNet. I recommend them to a number of colleagues, friends and family - so get discounted broadband for myself (every person that you recommend who subsequently signs up to PlusNet earns you cashback on your own account). We use them for mail, web and gaming (XBox Live and Playstation Network) - and few issues seen I rarely have to use their customer service, and have had few issues with them as a company over the years recommended

Avoid Avoid Avoid

Broadband Ratings

Avoid this lot. Ordered broadband option number 1 with free router as they claim to have the best customer service. They said they would send router in the post that day and call me a week later for my Mac code. I called them (a week later) and they said that I had signed up for phone & broadband package and they were contacting BT and they had all the wrong details and no router had been sent. At NO times did I order the phone as I had just signed up to BT for 12 months. Say they have call centre in the UK but both times I’ve called I might as well been speaking to Bombay as they could not understand the English language. If you’re going to have a call centre in Britain you might as well employ people who can speak English!!
