Orange is perhaps most famous as a mobile phone network, and appears to be a relative newcomer to the broadband industry, but it has actually had roots in the broadband market for some time. Orange is the commercial brand name for France Telecom, which was behind the internet service provider Freeserve when broadband first became popular. Freeserve was re-branded in 2005 as Wanadoo and then re-branded again in 2006 as Orange.

France Telecom is considered one of the leaders in telecommunications worldwide and its choice to use the Orange name for its broadband services appears to be a signal of its intent. Orange is the name used for its mobile and television services too - and the company is already overlapping its services to offer better deals.

Who is Orange broadband ideal for?

Anyone who wishes to merge their phone and broadband services from a big-name provider with a strong reputation for reliability will enjoy the Orange broadband product range. The Orange Livebox is one of the best wireless modems on the market with the ability to connect up to six PCs.

What do you need?

  • A home phone line (but not a cable or a phone line from Kingston Communications).
  • A PC with a CD-ROM drive.
  • A USB modem or wireless device - note that all Orange packages come with a wireless modem or Orange Livebox.
  • An Ethernet port.
  • Windows 2000 or above; Mac customers need Apple Mac OS X.

What else does Orange have to offer?

Each Orange broadband package includes free webmail and up to 150Mb of webspace. There is also expert technical support available from 7am-11pm and a free McAfee privacy service is included.

The most notable bonus with the Orange broadband packages however, is the free wireless modem on the Home Starter deal and the Orange Livebox that is included on both Home Select and Home Max. The Orange Livebox can be used to make calls via the internet simply by being plugged into a normal phone line - with inclusive calls to 01 and 02 landlines and select international destinations. It can also be used to play video games against online opponents.

The Orange Livebox is at the cutting edge of wireless technology and turns what are already good, competitive packages into excellent deals.

Slow to act. Will not answer queqtions directly.I was actually told for almost a month that they had not initiated my phone service when they actually had as I found when the bill appeared.Refused to email answers on technical queries then told me to write to Rotherham, then kept me waiting on phon e for up to 40 minutes. Finally gave me ONE FREE MONTH as compensation. All I wanted was a decent service Roll on August next year when I will 100% migrate

If you value your time or your saniity just do not consider Orange as a provider Just imagine customer service 10 times worse than BT Just imagine a provider that is amateur and cannot cope Just imagine a provider that is not bothered Then ask yourself do I really want to put myself through the pain and misery of signing up with this bunch of clowns. My answer was no but not before I had invested a lot of money time and effort. Do yourself a favour and avoid like the plague

Just don't do it

I was a content freeserve customer, then wanadoo and happy with Orange, until I moved house. This obviously stretched Orange to there limits. I have a sound technical knowledge, having a degree in Computing and understood the problems involved with a move. I informed Orange of my plans and contacted them as soon as we had our phone reconnected. I waited the required week to see if my router detected the DSL line. This didn't happen so it was of to technical support. The next 6 weeks were spend waiting on the phone for someone in India to ask me the same screen load of questions, leaving my computer on over night connected to my mastersocket. Only to be asked to do the same the next day. Only got to speak to someone when I requested a MAC code. Went to Zen, sorted out in 2 days

Terrible Internet Provider

Orange are a decent provider untill you get to peak times (6pm-11am) then they severely traffic shape everyone, web pages will take about 2-3 times longer to load thats if you are lucky so I really wouldn't recommend them, get someone else. P.S The Fair Usage Policy does not state how much is "huge" so for instance 10GB could be huge to some where as 100GB could be huge to others so they trap you that way and will eventually drain your speed untill you wish you never entered the 18 month contract, YES 18 MONTHS BEFORE YOU CAN LEAVE!
