Firmly established as a mobile phone network, O2 has branched out and now offers broadband too. O2 was formed when the BT group de-merged several aspects of its business to strengthen its positions with shareholders. Originally known as BT Cellnet, the company changed its name to O2 UK on November 17, 2001. Now known as Telefonica O2, it has the largest number of subscribers out of all the major UK network operators.

O2 made its first step into broadband when it purchased Be broadband – which offered the fastest broadband speeds in the UK. From October 2007 it launched its own broadband brand with discounts to customers who are O2 mobile phone contract or pay-as-you-go customers.

Who is o2 broadband ideal for?

O2 broadband will appeal to anyone who wants super-fast broadband with unlimited* downloads from a broadband company with an extensive background in the provision of communication services. Its packages are straightforward broadband only deals but will carry particular appeal to current O2 mobile phone users who can benefit from a discount.

What do you need?

  • A BT home phone line.
  • A PC with a CD-ROM drive.
  • O2 broadband comes with the O2 wireless box. If you don’t want wireless you can use Ethernet cables.
  • An Ethernet port.
  • Windows 2000 or above, Mac customers need Apple Mac OS 10.

What else does o2 have to offer?

All three O2 broadband packages come with the O2 wireless box, a free UK customer service line, McAfee security, free web texts and up to 10 email addresses. You will be tied into a 12month contract no matter which package you choose.

O2 attempts to offer peace of mind to its customers and runs a money back guarantee. At the time of publication this is a 50day guarantee applicable for sign-ups before July 31, 2008 – meaning that if you do sign up before then you will be able to change your mind if you’re unhappy with the service provided.

As an added extra to O2 mobile phone customers, O2 broadband offers O2 email to mobile with which you can get emails directly to your handset – up to 1,000 a month. They appear on your screen like text messages.

I admit I have only been with 02 a week but I was with sky and got 1.49 mbs down 0.1 up, for over 6 months and they would not fix, I went to 02 and got 9.2 download speed and 1.2mbs up,and 3 months free, Fantastic.

I wish I had changed to o2 years ago

Broadband Ratings

After being on aol for a number of years and finding it getting slower and also loosing connection I decided to go onto o2 after reading reports on this site. It is like being in a different world, I am getting over 10 meg in the mornings and dropping to 6meg in the evenings on the standard package, on aol I was lucky to get 1.8meg, so much better at half the price as I am on o2 mobile. o2 kept me up to date with the progress via e-mail and text messages on my phone and on the day I received the text telling me all was ready, I put the disk in and was all up and working in about 30 mins. I had no problem migrating from aol, I had no problem obtaining a mac code and cancelling my account, they even informed me I was up to date with my subscriptions so I was able to cancel the DD.

THE WORST EVER................KEEP AWAY

Broadband Ratings

Should be getting up to 8Mbit/s but since I connected with O2 I am getting a ridiculous 50-10kbits/s , slower than dial up connection. Quite often I can not even connect to internet at all. For three months now they keep saying they will buy more bandwidth from BT, but nothing happens. At the end, they insist that I have to pay for 12 months if I were to cancel the contract although they fail badly to provide any service. DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE.

Fully satisfied

Broadband Ratings

Hi there, just really want to let people know o2 is one of the best broadband provider in the UK for sure. I am myself very into computer networking and stuff like that so i know what i'm talking about. First of all: how u get connected - it worked just like i was expecting, it was right on time, i was informed very well whats going to happen next and really pleased with the way everything worked. Then i can say about speed and reliability: its good! its not perfect, because UK is still way behind top level regarding worldwide "good-living" countries (Japan, USA, Sweden, Norway and so on). Now i want to evaluate technical support - brilliant. Called em, had issue with antivirus u get from o2 (its extra! no additional cost). Few minutes - sorted. Even had a chat about football with the guy!

Not a happy bunny

Broadband Ratings

I have been with o2 for a year now and the broadband speed I have been getting has been droping over time during the evenings when I use it most. Tech support are friendly but haven't fixed my problem after repeated calls. My download speed is now less than 0.5Meg which is too slow to watch streaming video. for an 8Meg package it's frustrating. The connection also drops out during the day when I am using it for work.
