At a time when the broadband market is overrun with special deals and slogans such as 'free' and 'unlimited' broadband, one provider bucks the trend by proudly promoting its honest approach to broadband marketing while at the same time striving to offer value for money.

The provider in question is Madasafish, part of the Brightview Group, established in 2001. The company also speaks proudly about the quality of customer services with support technicians fully trained for both Windows PCs and Macs. In 2006 the company scooped the best heavy consumer broadband award at the Internet Service Provider Awards (ISPAs).

As an established provider of line rental, Madasafish can also offer large savings for phone calls made if you choose to tie in one of its Talk plans with your broadband subscription.

Who is Madasafish broadband ideal for?

Madasafish broadband packages are suitable for all types of users - although most will prefer the MAX broadband deal, which is the cheapest in the range. With a capacity of 5Gb/month it is more than adequate for most users while allowing you to enjoy super-fast internet speeds.

What do you need?

  • You must have a non-cable phone line.
  • All Madasafish packages include a free home wireless networking kit - the DSL-924.
  • For those with a Windows PC, you must have Windows 2000 or higher, with a minimum of a Pentium 350MHz processor or equivalent with an available Ethernet port.
  • If you have a Mac you must have an available Ethernet port and it must be an IMac G3, Powerbook G3 or above, running OSX 10.1 or above.

What else does Madasafish have to offer?

There are a number of bonus features for Madasafish subscribers including unlimited email addresses, free webmail, 100Mb of webspace, a free Static IP address and a trial version of BullGuard security suite.

The free wireless networking kit comes with every package, as does a free connection. You can also choose to move your line rental over to Madasafish to capitalise on its Talk Free and Talk Anytime offers. Talk free has unlimited weekend and evening calls to UK landlines beginning with 01 and 02; while Talk Anytime has unlimited calls to UK landlines (again beginning with 01 and 02) at any time.

Madasafish broadband clearly has vast appeal to anyone wishing to combine their services and pay both their broadband and phone charges with one simple bill. However, even if you are looking for a broadband-only deal Madasafish is well worth consideration thanks to its cost-effective packages, the wide range of choice available and its refreshing honesty and attitude towards its customers.

Just Awful

Broadband Ratings

Terrible from start to finish. Took ages to set up but when it worked, it was ok in terms of speed and reliability. However, when I moved house and tried to take the service with me this was when the fun and games started. They insisted that they were supplying my new address as requested for over a month and when they finally agreed to send an engineer to check on the fault he rang me from outside my previous address, which they had been supplying broadband to at my expense the whole time. Took actual months, and hours of agonising phone conversations, to cancel the contract and get my money back but then six months later I got a letter from a solictor threatening to take me to court over this refunded money. Honestly, they are a total joke - avoid for the sake of your sanity

Madasafish takes dive since BT takeover!

Added 28/08/2008, reviewed by Steve (Selkirk)

Broadband Ratings

I have been a Madasafish customer for years. Originally with a dialup connection, more recently with Broadband. I haven't used their service for the past 3 months, initially because of a technical breakdown with the Madasafish supplied wireless 'dongle'. - I waited for 4 weeks for a replacement, and despite a number of calls and emails, only received one after I had already told them I was cancelling my service with them. Despite their agreeing to cease my service (and my cancelling a direct debit with them) they have made 3 unauthorised withdrawals from my credit card of £17.99 each, and stated I owe them over £100 for early termination of service. I have reached an impasse with them now, and so will be getting my credit card provider to recover the unauthorised deductions.

No phone line but still billed !!

Broadband Ratings

Had a fault on my BT line since 6th April. Received an email from Madasafish to say that I had gone over my 5GB limit. Checked online to find that even though my line was down I had used over 3GB in 3 days !!! No one in technical support could explain and tried to tell me someone had hacked into my wireless router even though the phone line is down. Customer services had me on hold for over an hour and at 4p a minute , a very good earner for them !! I'd rather cut my toe nails with a chainsaw than use them !!

Utterly Clueless - life's too short

Added 15/04/2008, reviewed by anonymous (Chester)

OK, line speed for me in a city centre is ok. And tech support is ok. but the rest of it - simply unbelievable - I've had to deal with some dreadful companies but this lot take the whole biscuit tin. I moved flat, they charged me £40.96 not once but three times and would only repay once I sent a fax of my bank statement to prove it - after I had had to edit the whole darn thing. And then they cut me off without warning because my debit card number changed - they sent a letter but it arrived after they had suspended my account. Twice. Then there were the three different but hugely late deliveries of the wireless way-last generation router. I have persisted only because this is a second home, but if I had known what they were like..don't believe a word of the glowing reviews by their staff.

What's gone wrong?

Added 07/04/2008, reviewed by Steve (Northampton)

Broadband Ratings

Been with them for eight years - first as freenetname, more recently as madasafish. Everything was fine until a series of take-overs and ownership faffs in the last year or so. Since the beginning of 2008 by speed has dropped by about 40%, my stats have gone haywire and billing, as a result, uncertain. Customer Service is always very polite, but doesn't resolve the problem. Bye bye chaps. Been good knowing you at times.
