If you are self-employed, run your own small business or simply work from home, your needs for the internet are likely to be on a different level from the average user who is simply looking to check emails, download music or play online games.

In the case of large businesses, these needs are even more expansive as you try to grab the full potential of the internet in a networked office space. For these reasons, Demon broadband has emerged as one of the most important providers in the broadband market - with packages tailored towards office and business use.

Demon also offers two packages in its 'business broadband' range - Demon Business 2000 which is tailored towards small businesses and heavy home users; and Demon Business 8000 for networking offices.

Who is Demon broadband ideal for?

Clearly the Demon broadband range largely caters for home office users and small businesses. However, more conventional consumers should also consider Demon Home 8000 as it is a competitive home broadband product from a provider that is used to dealing with pressing matters from its business clientele and therefore should be well-equipped to easily deal with traditional services.

What do you need?

  • A standard analogue phone line is required and it must be provided by BT.
  • You can pick-up the service from an extension socket as long as you use the microfilters correctly.
  • A USB modem or a wireless router.
  • Demon Home broadband includes an optional Alcatel SpeedTouch ST330 modem and two microfilters that is compatible with Windows 98 and above along with Mac OS 8/9 and OS X.
  • Demon offers a range of modems on its HomeOffice package including the SpeedTouch ST330 as its entry-level product and the SpeedTouch ST585 wireless router. Adapter cards are also available.

What else does Demon have to offer?

One of the key advantages of Demon broadband is the fact that it offers legitimate incentives to home office workers. This isn't a package that simply claims to be for businesses because it offers fast speeds and unlimited* downloads - instead it offers a number of additional benefits.

For example, the HomeOffice 8000 package includes internet security with anti-phishing, anti-spam and virus protection. There is also the Demon Dial Companion that allows you to send email and access the internet when you are away from your base. The hardware options also cater for individual needs and the electronic fax is a useful extra for any start-up business.

If you are in the market for broadband and particularly for office use, Demon should be among those that you strongly consider so you can enjoy the specialised service you require.

Good speed & reliable; poor call centre

Added 28/02/2008, reviewed by Richard (Ellon)

Broadband Ratings

In the 2yrs I've had Demon they've upgraded me from initial 2Mbps to 8Mbps & with my distance from the exchange I can get 7.5Mbps on a reliable basis; no downtimes experienced & I've been happy with this aspect of the service. I've contacted Billing & Tech Support a couple of times since the call centre move to India & each time has been frustrating: twice I have needed to be transferred from customer service to tech support, they've put me on hold whilst they transferred me & after a couple of minutes I've been disconnected; the last time was when asking for my MAC to transfer - so wrote in & 5 days later I was phoned by UK & given the MAC (a much better service). My main reason for transferring is price: at £17.99 per month plus BT line rental I'm after a bundled deal.

Good so long as nothing breaks

Added 20/02/2008, reviewed by anonymous (Insch)

Broadband Ratings

I've been with Demon on and off for more than 10 years, both for business and home use. Billing, speed and reliability have all been good to excellent, with only one or two outages per year. On the down side, when the service fails the outsourced customer service and technical support in India are truly abysmal. I live in the village of Insch, but when I told one customer rep he indignantly told me "inch is a measurement, not a place". I know a reasonable amount about computers, networks and the internet, but I should not find myself having to explain things to IT support staff who clearly haven't a clue. I've also moved house four times during my time with Demon and they manage to stuff it up each time. So why do I stay? Unlimited downloads and excellent reliability and speed.

Avoid Demon

Added 15/01/2008, reviewed by anonymous (West Sussex)

Broadband Ratings

I was originally very pleased with Demon when I signed up a year and a half ago, but the service went downhill after about 6 months when they sent out emails warning people of an impending overhall on the network to we would get 8mb broadband. I was already on 2.4 mb and knew my line couldnt handle much more than this but they insisted it could and went ahead with the "upgrade". Not long after my service was cut in half to 1mb but still for the same price, unless I cancelled my subscribtion and re-joined, which would mean weeks of not being connected to the net, something I couldnt do at the time as I use it for work. Now more recently my speeds are randomly terrible for whole days at a time, with little or no explanation from Demon technical support, needlesss to say ill be moving isp

The ISP that also takes holidays

Added 09/01/2008, reviewed by anonymous (F)

Broadband Ratings

Having been with £27PCM beeb.net for a few years now, a trend has been noticed. Whenever a UK public holiday arises, it can be near-as-dammit guaranteed that the beeb.net ISP will fail for many many days. Hmmm? Overtime comes to mind! Beeb.net uses Demon. Every Christmas, or long weekend public holiday, my email fails on day one. on day two, my system is totally offline. I no longer ring up to ask the outage duration as the excuses make me fall off my chair with laughter. The list of excuses is VAST, including "we are having the server replaced". Speak to someone else for a different reason one hour later. Now I know why its called Demon. The ISP from Hell! Beeb.net staff are great. Their service isn't though. I've got my MACode to migrate now. Bye Demon. Bye beeb.net.
