The vast majority of UK broadband providers rely on BT phone lines and BT exchanges to supply services to their customers. In the case of BT, the company is only reliant on itself. This gives the company great scope to build on the level of packages it offers and also makes it one of the most accessible broadband providers in the UK.

In recent years, BT broadband has used this leading market position to grab a massive share of the market - and it is currently the most popular broadband provider in the UK. It has been able to maintain this position due to competitive price packaging and being among the leaders in expanding broadband technology into both phone and television use with BT Fusion and BT Vision.

Who is British Telecom (BT) broadband ideal for?

Basically, BT Total Broadband has something for everyone. With 8Mb speeds on all packages and large download limits (the 5Gb on Option One will be more than adequate for more than 90% of users), you don't need to compromise on any of the services you would expect from a good broadband deal. Instead you simply make your choice based on contractual length (all packages offer 12 and 18 month deals), pricing and the additional services you require.

What do you need?

  • A BT phone line.
  • BT Total Broadband packages come with the option of a wireless BT 'home hub' but you can also use other BT approved modems.
  • PC users require Windows 2000 or above while Mac users need 8/9 or higher, or Mac OSX.

What else does British Telecom (BT) have to offer?

With BT broadband there are a host of added incentives including 5Gb of free online storage with all three packages; 24/7 customer support; inclusive evening and weekend broadband calls; and 250 Wi-Fi minutes per month.

However, what really sets BT broadband aside from other packages in the market are the additional services you can tie to your broadband connection. For example, the home hub is a wireless router that updates itself automatically so it always stays secure and with Option Three this comes with the BT hub phone on which you can make cheap internet calls.

Also, if you take out BT Total Broadband you can add-on BT Vision and gain access to more than 70 digital TV and radio channels. There is also a wide range of on-demand programming through BT Vision – but you must live in a Freeview area to qualify.

To summarise, BT offers services that continue to be at the cutting edge of the broadband market and with its huge service advantage its offers are difficult to ignore.

Great service rubbish at billing

Added 21/10/2009, reviewed by anonymous (Kennford)

Broadband Ratings

I been with BT for 2 years after Virgin couldnt supply me more than 2 meg due to BT restricting the bandwith (understandable) Sign up with BT and got 6.9 meg and i live in the middle of no where. Had a few problems which i was told that if an engineer found the problem in my house i will be charge 200 quid but luckly it wasn't and although the line test was fine dosn't mean there aint a fault. Some faults can only be found by getting an engineer out!! otherwise BT are the best. just renew my contract at 20 a month option 3 for 20 quid a month inc line rental... ha and all new comers have to pay 24 + 12.50 line rental. oh and billing well it get sorted after ringing them but i warn you if your bill rises they take the extra money without warning ya.

Appalling Service

Added 10/10/2009, reviewed by Geoff Huijer (Kinghorn)

Broadband Ratings

I would not recommend this company to anyone. Appalling to deal with in every way. My download speed is 2.76 Mbps & upload speed is 0.17 Mbps. I even tried their e-billing service and every password they gave me to enter the site was useless. I made countless phone calls to rectify the problem to no avail. I finally gave up; I am now charged 4.50 to pay my bill with them. There is not enough room here to explain all of their dreadful service. Unfortunately I have to score them with 1 out of 10 in each category, but frankly would not give them this much!

Very mixed feelings

Added 07/10/2009, reviewed by anonymous (Hague)

Broadband Ratings

Has never let me down, but speed is far less than advertised. All bt billing seems unnecessarily complex. Heaven help you if you have a non-standard prob. You'll just get the standard answers from their vdu screens, so are likely find it necessary to escalate to bt board level.

Beware the cap

Added 02/10/2009, reviewed by Stephen (Shropshire)

Broadband Ratings

Arrived with BT after tiscali changed hands. On the whole BT provides a better experience than Tiscali customer service with both is a pretty dire experience especially with those who have limited english, some are very good so credit where credit is due. My real concern is with the 'download' allowance, all the other providers state their limit as a download limit BT describe and enforce it as a 'useage' limit so your 10gb limit can easily be using nearly half of that uploading whatever, and your computer may be uploading more than you think. For intsance in 25 days of monitoring my useage we uploaded 1.1gb and downloaded 2.4gb so the true comparison for BT should read 10gb of use which gives a guidline of around 6 to 7gb download. I was astounded to find that 5.1gb was used in 10 days
