The vast majority of UK broadband providers rely on BT phone lines and BT exchanges to supply services to their customers. In the case of BT, the company is only reliant on itself. This gives the company great scope to build on the level of packages it offers and also makes it one of the most accessible broadband providers in the UK.

In recent years, BT broadband has used this leading market position to grab a massive share of the market - and it is currently the most popular broadband provider in the UK. It has been able to maintain this position due to competitive price packaging and being among the leaders in expanding broadband technology into both phone and television use with BT Fusion and BT Vision.

Who is British Telecom (BT) broadband ideal for?

Basically, BT Total Broadband has something for everyone. With 8Mb speeds on all packages and large download limits (the 5Gb on Option One will be more than adequate for more than 90% of users), you don't need to compromise on any of the services you would expect from a good broadband deal. Instead you simply make your choice based on contractual length (all packages offer 12 and 18 month deals), pricing and the additional services you require.

What do you need?

  • A BT phone line.
  • BT Total Broadband packages come with the option of a wireless BT 'home hub' but you can also use other BT approved modems.
  • PC users require Windows 2000 or above while Mac users need 8/9 or higher, or Mac OSX.

What else does British Telecom (BT) have to offer?

With BT broadband there are a host of added incentives including 5Gb of free online storage with all three packages; 24/7 customer support; inclusive evening and weekend broadband calls; and 250 Wi-Fi minutes per month.

However, what really sets BT broadband aside from other packages in the market are the additional services you can tie to your broadband connection. For example, the home hub is a wireless router that updates itself automatically so it always stays secure and with Option Three this comes with the BT hub phone on which you can make cheap internet calls.

Also, if you take out BT Total Broadband you can add-on BT Vision and gain access to more than 70 digital TV and radio channels. There is also a wide range of on-demand programming through BT Vision – but you must live in a Freeview area to qualify.

To summarise, BT offers services that continue to be at the cutting edge of the broadband market and with its huge service advantage its offers are difficult to ignore.

my internet got disconnected because i had insufficient funds on my current account, tried to clear off the bill but bt dont accept maestro cards, so they simply decided to cut me off when i have been a customer for almost 10 years, everytimg you call bt, they keep transferring you to different department and when you finally do get hold of someone, they cant speak or hear english well and you have to keep repeating yourself. some of them have even refused to serve me just because i didnt have the bt account number, i think it ridiculous, funny thing have always recommended my customers to bt,i just hop they all dont come back telling me that bt s customer services is crap!!!

BT = B* Terrible!

Added 18/11/2008, reviewed by anonymous (Aberdeen)

Broadband Ratings

I used to have BT 512Mbps broadband and it was fast and reliable - it did what it said on the tin. I agreed to their upgrade package to 8Mbps broadband but ever since my download speeds have been considerably SLOWER than they were when I was on the old package. I test my speed regularly and they average 379Kbps with peaks of 1.2Mbps and lows of 37Kbps downloading. My upload speeds vary between 0 and 20Kbps, averaging 11Kbps. BT Broadband is a complete rip-off. Having spoken to a former BT engineer I now know that they put a "choke" on domestic broadband and only relax it for a few months after someone complains about their speeds.

BT- Your automated ansaphone sickens me

Added 17/11/2008, reviewed by anonymous (dover)

Broadband Ratings

I was on an option 3 "legacy" agreement and queried my bill. After going round and round AND ROUND their infernal automated customer service system I eventually got to speak to somebody, only to be put back in a queue and being recycled into the automated merry-go-round. I will not be going with BT again just because of this. Generally the reliability was good to v. good. The speed was disappointing at times but I do live out in the sticks. Technical support was disappointing for a company like BT. I had developed a problem with the router and it took far too long to identify and fix the problem. The most frustrating thing was having to wait for somebody to visit, only to have him confirm that the line and conns were good but he didn't have a spare router and cable to test the whole system

disappointed

Broadband Ratings

We have been with BT for about a year and never really had issues with reliability or speed, I found them quite dependable for our internet. However their billing system is appalling and everytime I rang for an explanation I would go through to India where no one could help me. I have been on the support about 2 hours at a time being past to different departments - Just to pay a bill! Finally be v. carefull with BT as you are not able to change a the name on the account and in one case, before my contract was up, they cheekily renewed it without my consent!!

If there is a problem Tech Supp is VG

Added 04/11/2008, reviewed by nigel (leeds)

Broadband Ratings

I have now had BT Broadband for 14 months. During that time I have lost service twice where I was unable to logon to the internet. Each time BT Tech Supp talked me through and with my permission logged on to my PC remotely to fix the problem. Each time the fix was required because of software I had downloaded which was causing the problem. They were extremely knowledgeable, helpful, understanding and courteous. At a time when all you have tried has failed this is exactly the type of service you need.
