Hutchison 3G acquired a government licence to run third generation wireless services in May 2000. The largest licence was set aside for a newcomer, which instantly gave Hutchison 3G (now 3 Mobile) the largest spectrum which it can use to its advantage in supplying multimedia services and offering value for money.

3 Mobile has now expanded its list of services to include broadband offered through the freedom of a dongle. Mobile broadband allows users to access the internet anywhere at any time without having to be in range of a wireless hub or hotspot. The 3 Mobile broadband packages have proven so popular that the company briefly ran out of stock.

Who is 3 mobile broadband broadband ideal for?

Due to its flexibility, 3 Mobile broadband is best suited to those who commute to work and need to stay on top of their workload at all times. It is also good for people who like to be flexible about where they access the internet – such as in a park, on a train or just to work outside. As there is no line rental required mobile broadband has also proven popular among students and those who rent accommodation.

What do you need?

  • A 3-Mobile pay as you go or pay monthly package.
  • USB dongle – available for free on all 18month contracts.
  • A Windows or MAC OSX computer.
  • Windows 2000, XP or Vista. Mac users need Mac OSX 10.4 or above.
  • A minimum of 100Mb of free hard-disk space.
  • An available USB slot or USB hub.

What else does 3 mobile broadband have to offer?

3-Mobile offers the same rates as a pre-pay option without contractual obligations which is well suited to those who have bad credit.

There are a range of packages to choose from based on the data allowance you require meaning there is something for every type of internet user – whether light or heavy. If you are covered by the 3-Mobile network (which accounts for 86% of the UK) you can benefit from faster data speeds.

Keep getting disconnected

The speed is quite slow, and I keep getting disconnected. I have used a Vodafone dongle in the past, and I didn't have any problems with them. The Three dongle is not reliable.

THE BIGGEST LOAD OF CRAP IN THE WORLD!

I had a feeling using 3 would be a bad idea but went with them against my better judement. Thank god I am only on pay as you go and not tied into a contract! It is almost impossible to connect to the internet and when you do, it's so slow that you can't actually do anything, it takes ages to get onto any sites, keeps timing out, losing connection, you name it, it does it. 'Technical support' should re-name themselves, as they offer no support whatsoever, let alone 'technical' support! Apparently all they can do is ask you questions about your modem and then tell you that you are 'in one of the best coverage areas & have one of the best signals.' CLEARLY NOT! Choosing 3 was honestly the worst decision I ever made in my life! Don't make the same mistake, go with someone else, ANYONE else!!!!

Fantastic for the money

Not needed any support, just plugged in and got online. I'm using prepay and I'm really really really pleased with the service I am getting. I just need an internet connection on the go and this provides it. Used it all the way from London to Cardiff on the M4 and staued connected to the net all the way. Brilliant!

Beyond terrible

I'm writing this to warn anyone who's thinking of signing up with Three to think again. I was a customer for a year and had a horrible experience with them. Oh yeah, for the 2 week trial period it was great. Then, speeds dropped to a crawl. In a nutshell, here are the problems I faced with Three * Shockingly slow speeds in the evenings. Every evening. Pages timing out because they were so slow * Indian tech support who had poor English and were clearly reading from scripts * Everyone on the network had the same IP address. This can lead websites to think they're being attacked. * POP Gmail often didn't work because of this shared IP * I couldn't update my blog because it corrupted images and didn't always save my work * Forget about YouTube, Bebo, MySpace and live radio

Stick with dial up- awful awful service

Not a good product. Doesn't work well with Vista. Three's service and technical support have been awful. Speeds are extremely variable, but bad way more than fast. I know other service providers can make these 3G services work well, but Three haven't done a good job with this and don't seem to care.
