Hutchison 3G acquired a government licence to run third generation wireless services in May 2000. The largest licence was set aside for a newcomer, which instantly gave Hutchison 3G (now 3 Mobile) the largest spectrum which it can use to its advantage in supplying multimedia services and offering value for money.

3 Mobile has now expanded its list of services to include broadband offered through the freedom of a dongle. Mobile broadband allows users to access the internet anywhere at any time without having to be in range of a wireless hub or hotspot. The 3 Mobile broadband packages have proven so popular that the company briefly ran out of stock.

Who is 3 mobile broadband broadband ideal for?

Due to its flexibility, 3 Mobile broadband is best suited to those who commute to work and need to stay on top of their workload at all times. It is also good for people who like to be flexible about where they access the internet – such as in a park, on a train or just to work outside. As there is no line rental required mobile broadband has also proven popular among students and those who rent accommodation.

What do you need?

  • A 3-Mobile pay as you go or pay monthly package.
  • USB dongle – available for free on all 18month contracts.
  • A Windows or MAC OSX computer.
  • Windows 2000, XP or Vista. Mac users need Mac OSX 10.4 or above.
  • A minimum of 100Mb of free hard-disk space.
  • An available USB slot or USB hub.

What else does 3 mobile broadband have to offer?

3-Mobile offers the same rates as a pre-pay option without contractual obligations which is well suited to those who have bad credit.

There are a range of packages to choose from based on the data allowance you require meaning there is something for every type of internet user – whether light or heavy. If you are covered by the 3-Mobile network (which accounts for 86% of the UK) you can benefit from faster data speeds.

Absolutly Worthless

Broadband Ratings

Do not go with 3. Never works, and when it does it takes at leat 5 minutes to load a page. Have to speak to customer services over in India, which can take over an hour, and at the end of it they dont know what to suggest and hang up on you! Bearing in mind that the phone call costs about £10 itself.

Useless

Added 21/10/2009, reviewed by John (Worthing)

Broadband Ratings

Bought a 3 dongle to tide me over until landline sorted, but it's useless. Despite assurance of 'excellent coverage Mr John', no usable reception at BN11, wouldn't even load Google home page. They then charged me for a further months rental, which was nice. T-Moblie however, have it a bit better sorted.

Poor Service with even Worse Back Up

Added 15/09/2009, reviewed by anonymous (Bedford)

Broadband Ratings

Extremely Poor Service & Technical support useless Bought via phone, the first dongle never worked & was returned 3 times before being replaced. Each time you talk to CS in India you go through lenghty checking proceedure on an expensive phone line(1 call lasted 1hr20m), at end of call Technical Support Guy said he did not know what to suggest, went to local 3 Store confirmed item defective, BUT before 3 would arrange collection its another lenghty checking proceedure. 2nd Dongle has connected on a few occassions but is unreliable. Attempted use in Europe recently again no success. I have left it connected for up to 5 hours before it changed from red to green. Was assurred my area had good coverage, this has proved to be false. Written 3 letters, without ANY responce

Unbelievably bad - Do not go with 3

Added 09/09/2009, reviewed by anonymous (London)

Broadband Ratings

All letters with package were written as if I had ordered a mobile phone (obviously system default and not been updated since offering the dongles). The letters stated that I had 14 days to return the product if I was not happy (and that if I did this I would not be charged). I telephoned customer services before I opened the product to make sure I was able to test that I could get a good reception. After confirming this was ok and that I could still send the dongle back I proceeded to try the dongle out. Speed was useless, and I live near central london! Sent it back immediately (within their 14 day promise) and have still been charged for 2 months use. 10 minutes use has cost me 45 quid and customer service was worst than useless. DO NOT BOTHER WITH 3 - SHOCKING SERVICE

DON'T DO IT -- WORST BROADBAND EVER !!

Added 08/09/2009, reviewed by Ben (Bournemouth)

Broadband Ratings

I have had lots of internet providerS over the years but we were in an inbetween flat for 6 months which did not have a landline. I did'nt want to fork out 110 pound to BT to put in a line and pay 11 pound a month + broadband on top..... soo the 3G USB Stick sounded perfect..The sales guy that set up my contract was happy to say it is up to 3.2mb download speed but varies so not quite that much.... it is 10% of the max speed!!! HOWEVER..In BH8, BH10, BH9, BH6 postcodes it is rubbish, normally gives you a barely useable 300kb download speed which allows the front page of google to come up and text websites... pictures and video are useless....Evenings are unusable, from 6 til 10pm there is no point trying it. An 18 month nightmare which you cannot cancel! DON'T DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
