Hutchison 3G acquired a government licence to run third generation wireless services in May 2000. The largest licence was set aside for a newcomer, which instantly gave Hutchison 3G (now 3 Mobile) the largest spectrum which it can use to its advantage in supplying multimedia services and offering value for money.

3 Mobile has now expanded its list of services to include broadband offered through the freedom of a dongle. Mobile broadband allows users to access the internet anywhere at any time without having to be in range of a wireless hub or hotspot. The 3 Mobile broadband packages have proven so popular that the company briefly ran out of stock.

Who is 3 mobile broadband broadband ideal for?

Due to its flexibility, 3 Mobile broadband is best suited to those who commute to work and need to stay on top of their workload at all times. It is also good for people who like to be flexible about where they access the internet – such as in a park, on a train or just to work outside. As there is no line rental required mobile broadband has also proven popular among students and those who rent accommodation.

What do you need?

  • A 3-Mobile pay as you go or pay monthly package.
  • USB dongle – available for free on all 18month contracts.
  • A Windows or MAC OSX computer.
  • Windows 2000, XP or Vista. Mac users need Mac OSX 10.4 or above.
  • A minimum of 100Mb of free hard-disk space.
  • An available USB slot or USB hub.

What else does 3 mobile broadband have to offer?

3-Mobile offers the same rates as a pre-pay option without contractual obligations which is well suited to those who have bad credit.

There are a range of packages to choose from based on the data allowance you require meaning there is something for every type of internet user – whether light or heavy. If you are covered by the 3-Mobile network (which accounts for 86% of the UK) you can benefit from faster data speeds.

This was my first experience of Mobile Broadband and I went for a monthly contract. The people in the 3 shop were great and answered all my questions and did the deal promising that in Italy where there was a 3 Network and it would be the same cost as in the UK. This is true BUT if it does not find the 3 network, Italy is patchy, it connects to another network and the charges ramp up, £65 for two nights of limited usage; download email, check the news and sport, few searches, etc. I could have accepted this if the customer service was not awful, it took me two months to get out of the contract, including payment of a final settlement figure of £190, which was then followed by another bill the following month. After 6 mths to calm down I am now trying T Mobile...watch this space.

DO NOT DO IT WHATEVER YOU DO!!!!!

I had an absolute nightmare with 3 mobile broadband. The long of it is it just does not work!!!! You connect and then 10 seconds later it disconnects and freezes saying there is no service or the page cannot be found (this occurs for pages like google.com) I am in a busy London street and a good coverage area so there should be no excuse!!!!! You simply cannot connect to the internet for more than 5 mins before it disconnects. Worst of all, they will not break your contract no matter what and it took me about 15 hours and 25 phone call to their indian call centres before they agreed to break my 18 month contract. It was a dreadful experience and say avoid at all costs!!!!!!!!!

Been using 3 mobile broadband for just over a year now and can honestly say a great product, use it every day and there have only two days when I could not get a signal. I do believe it does matter where you live as to the quality of signal you get! because a mate of mine 4 miles down the road couldn't get a decent signal and switched to vodafone. Already being a 3 mobile phone customer I get my broadband at half price £7.50!! (even less with the vat cut). Will seriously consider renewing my contract at the end of 18 months.

Problems since day 1, get disconnected frequently very slow loading of web pages. Have been on the phone to Tech support for the last 5 days each time i ring they have my do the exact same troubleshooting things to the same results, have had the modem replaced and the same problems still continue, they refuse the accept the the problem is their network signal, even though they say im in an excellent coverage area. on 2 occasions when i have been on the phone to them they somehow manage to re route my call to the PAYG top up service so i have to ring again and go through the whole process again. Am seriously considering taking my case to trading stadards, as when i was sold the contract i was not informed that they were performing major upgrading works on the network masts in my area

Been using this for a while now. Very cheap, reasonably reliable (get disconnected on occasions), fast etc etc. Better than my old landline based setup with BT.
