Who is AOL broadband ideal for?

  • AOL Wireless + Evening & Weekend – Take out an 18 month contract, receive a free wireless router and pay no set up fee. Available with speeds up to 8Mbps and a download capacity of 10GB. The monthly cost is just £4.99 for the first 3months and £9.99 thereafter.

What do you need?

  • A BT phone line.
  • A USB modem to connect a PC or a wireless router AOL packages come with a free wireless router.
  • PC users need Windows 2000 or above. AOL broadband is also available now for Apple Mac customers - Mac users require 8/9 or higher, or Mac OSX.

What else does AOL have to offer?

New customers should watch out for special offers on AOL broadband packages. At the time of publication, AOL broadband offers a three-month introductory rate on the broadband wireless plus package and the free laptop offer on the broadband wireless deal. In addition, connection is free and you get 24hr online support.

Also look out for free wireless security on the AOL broadband wireless plus deal. Both packages also offer AOL Talk at no extra cost. AOL broadband wireless allows you to add Talk Evenings and Weekends for free, while AOL broadband wireless plus incorporates an AOL Talk pay-as-you-go subscription.

Watch out for the contractual periods - broadband wireless requires a minimum 18month deal, and with broadband wireless plus laptop offer you will be committed to the company for 24 months.

AOL broadband has a lot in its favour. It is a proven, big-name provider with a well-established name for customer service. Though the contracts are lengthy these deals are well worth consideration particularly as they offer so many added incentives. AOL broadband clearly offers some of the most competitive and cost-effective packages on the market at the moment.

AOL on a downward spiral

Broadband Ratings

I have been with AOL for many years, starting with dial-up then moving to their top broadband package when it became available on my exchange. Initially the service was pretty good, with free phone support and online "Live Help" in case of problems, which unfortunately were many due to the weird and unique AOL e-mail format. AOL UK then separated from AOL USA and some of the services that had been included (such as spyware protection) were no longer included. Then Carphone Warehouse took over AOL UK and even more of the support services were dropped. Phone support now has to be paid for and the "Live Help" function has been offline for many months supposedly being "upgraded". My wireless router disconnects with monotonous regularity. What keeps me with AOL? ...my inertia.
