Market-leading broadband available only through moneysupermarket

Moneysupermarket.com is offering internet users the opportunity to take advantage of an exclusive broadband deal...

Talktalk, the broadband provider owned by Carphone Warehouse, is offering a nine-month discount on its Talk 2 International package through moneysupermarket.com.

The deal, which normally costs £5.89 a month, is available for £3.89, making it one of the cheapest broadband packages on the market. Customers receive broadband speeds of up to 8 Megabits (Mb) and a monthly download allowance of 40 Gigabytes (GB).

This broadband offer is part of Talktalk's Talk 2 International call plan, so the monthly cost also includes free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines, free international calls to 36 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, France, Spain and Germany. Calls to US and Canadian mobiles are also free.

Talktalk requires you to sign up to an 18-month contract, so once the nine-month introductory offer is over, the monthly cost will rise to the standard £5.89.

The only broadband deal that works out cheaper on a monthly basis is Sky Base which is free if you are an existing Sky TV customer.

However, Sky Base only offers download speeds of up to 2Mb and the usage allowance is capped at 2GB a month. Sky Mid is comparable with Talk 2 International - it offers 8Mb broadband and a 40GB download cap for £5 a month, although this does not include a telephone package.

The table below illustrates how the Talktalk deal available exclusively through Moneysupermarket, compares with other offers that include free evening and weekend calls (AOL also offers free international calls to select destinations for the first three months):

It is worth noting, that you will have to pay line rental on top of the monthly tariff fee. Most broadband deals still require you to have a BT line - its line rental costs £10.50 a month, but customers who still receive a paper bill or who do not pay by direct debit will see this rise to £11.75 from April 1.

Talktalk is one of the few other providers to offer its own line rental - it charges £10.50 a month.

Virgin Media is a cable provider and a Virgin line is required. This costs £11 a month.

Which broadband deal is right for you?
The cheapest deal is not always the best so it's important to think about how you use the internet before you sign up, particularly as you'll probably be tied into an 18-month contract.

For light internet users - those who use the internet to send and receive emails and browse websites, but don't download music and videos - price is probably the leading factor to take into consideration as high speeds and download caps aren't that important.

Medium internet users who use the web daily and download music and video clips require a download cap of around 2GB a month and competitive download speeds - the super-fast 8Mb offered by all the deals listed above is more than sufficient.

Heavy users however, may wish to consider their options - these are the internet enthusiasts who enjoy online gaming, or perhaps work online. For them, a product with an unlimited download cap and lightning fast speeds may be the most important.

Currently, O2 offers its Premium broadband package for just £10 a month to all O2 mobile customers (contract and pay-as-you-go). This offers speeds up to 16Mb and unlimited downloads* along with a free wireless router. Alternatively, if you are not an O2 mobile customer Tiscali's 8Mb and free weekend talk is ideal at a cost of just £6.49 a month with an unlimited download capacity*.

For users looking to combine broadband, phone and TV services into one simple monthly payment, BT Option One offers the cheapest introductory rate - £8.95 for the first six months and £17.99 thereafter. This deal offers speeds of up to 8Mb with a 5GB download cap, a free router, free evening and weekend calls and more than 70 digital TV and radio channels.

The key is to think about how often you use the internet and which services you wish to combine. You should also consider availability in your area - entering your postcode into a comparison tool should indicate the broadband deals available to you.

*Fair use policy applies.
