Mobile Phones Case Study – Louise Jones

Case Study - Louise Jones

IT seems like the dream scenario - a new job, a new home and a new start. However, for most faced with that equation, simply keeping our feet on the ground would be a difficult enough challenge.

Yet for Louise Jones, 31, the key to success lay in her ability to stay organised and to do this she needed a new mobile phone.

“I got a new job as a sales representative,” she said. “It was perfect for me, but not for my mobile phone. My handset, a Nokia 3310, was badly outdated and I had my eye on the new Motorola PEBL which has Bluetooth technology and internet capabilities.

“I also realised my mobile phone tariff wasn’t right for my new job. I was on the Orange Off Peak 1000 price-plan, which was good but I was never using anywhere near the 1000 off peak minutes it allotted.

“But working as a sales rep meant I was going to be making a lot of peak time calls. So I decided to kill two birds with one stone.”

Ms Jones began to visit a number of mobile phone shops and look around on the internet for the best deal for her, a process that could have been cut short had the price comparison tool at moneysupermarket.com been in place at the time.

“I was in the eleventh month of my Orange contract, so I gave them a month’s notice. From that perspective things were easy,” she said. “However, I spent most of that month looking around. I really could have used moneysupermarket.com!”

Among the options Ms Jones considered was the Vodafone Anytime 350 tariff with which a Motorola PEBL would have cost just £9.99. However, ultimately she opted for the O2 250 plan and got the handset she wanted for free.

“It wasn’t just about the free handset,” she enthused. “I also really liked the price-plan. For £17.50/month I could get 500mins anytime as opposed to 350mins for £20/month with Vodafone. It was perfect for the job because I love to chat with clients.

“My company gives me money towards my tariff anyway, but this way I can use the phone for my friends too and still make a saving.”

She joked: “Hopefully, they’re as delighted with it as I am – I should win employee of the month!”

Ms Jones makes a saving of £7.50/month on her new monthly contract, but crucially for her she has the phone she wanted and a deal that closely matches her new needs.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled,” she said. “O2 delivered the phone the very next day. All it took was a couple of phone calls.

“I would tell anyone to do the same. No matter what contract you’re on, it doesn’t hurt to look. And you could get a new phone for free too!”
