very high electricty bill and debts

Hi...hope someone can help. I had been paying £70 per month direct debit to British Gas for my electricity....i always thought this was more than enough. I did notice the bills creeping up but when i worked out how much i was paying a quarter to what my bills where then presumed there would be enough to cover the bill and some of the debt amount....now i have been sent a letter saying they want £174 per month to cover bills and the debt is £900 !!!

Can this be right....we live in a standard 3 bed house...kids at school all day...only thing i would say is used everyday is the computer...we have not lived any differently and dont use any more than we always have done...so i dont understand whats changed.

The last bill they sent said we had used £315 over 90 days....night was 297 kilowatts over 90 days...day was 2399 kilowatts over 90 days...does this sound high to anyone.

There is no way i can afford £176 per month...what can i do..??

    Many thanks

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

I have been were you are this may be obvious but check your metre readings as they told me my bill was £3000.00 but they had way over estamated my readings. If this is not the case for you agree to pay what you can afford and try changing suppliers.

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

    thank you xx

I did a meter reading last night at 4pm and again tonight at 4pm and i have used in 24 hours 10 units....so surely over 90 days thats 900 units....so why do i get bills for over 2000 for 90 days ???...something must be wrong.

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

i have had a friend go through my bills and she has found that the reason the bills have been so high and amounted to this huge debt is cos they have doubled the rate i pay per unit in the last 2 years...therefore making my bills double what they had been and yet keeping my direct debits the same....

surely it cant be right for them to just charge what they like ???

when was i told that my charges where to be doubled...???

why was i not asked to increase my direct debits to account for these higher rates before now ???

This is daylight robbery.....how on earth can £70 per month not be enough for a standard 3 bed townhouse...with only 1 of the same as everyone else in the country...my last quarterly statement was for £325 !!!....2 years ago it was £160...nothing in my house has changed...no extra kids...no extra appliances...NOTHING.

I am spitting mad.....can you tell...:)

Thanks for listening to my rants...it helps a little. x

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

    nailstyle,

I don't normally venture into the general forum but I have been informed of your situation.

From what I have read you are on an Economy 7 meter. Regular forum users will know my views on these meters and it's not a good one. Unless you are using atleast 20% of your energy during the Economy 7 hours (normally 1am - 8am) then will be better off changing away from this meter.

You are only using 11% of your energy during these hours and so you need to change to a standed credit meter. You can do this by contacting your provider and asking for this to be changed asap. This should not incur a cost.

The other main issue is that you have been on a tariff and not looked for a better deal. This is a crucial mistake and one that MS.com are continually trying to remind people to do. Energy providers will not inform you of a cheaper product. Their main focus is to bring in new products to attract new customers. It's as simple as that. Unless you, the existing customer, find out about these cheaper products and request to be put on it you will remain on the product for which you original signed up to.

Changing product will not cost you anything but can save you £££s every year. As an added incentive MS.com are even offering up to £30 cashback if you change provider/product through our comparison site.

If you change to a cheaper product i.e. Click Energy 3 then this will hopefully bring your monthly payments down helping to soften the blow when the added payments to clear the debt are added.

    I'm here to help.

First action is to speak to British Gas and ask for them to remove the Economy 7 meter and get a standard credit meter installed. Once they have done this you want to change to a new product/tariff, preferably an 'Online' product and pay by monthly direct debit. The 'Online' products allow you to enter your 'actual' meter readings and therefore eliminate the risk of paying too much due to estimated readings from the provider.

Sorry I've rambled but this is something MS.com are passionate about and want to ensure that customers don't take their energy bills for granted. Instead take control and make sure you're getting the best deal.

    Hope this helps.

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

    nailstyle,

Yes. The two meter readings are split into day and night. The night rates show the energy you are using between the Economy 7 hours i.e. 1am - 8am, and the day reading is all the energy you use outside of these hours.

The day rates are set higher than standard rates and so that is why you have been facing high energy bills.

If you need anymore advice don't hesitate to get in touch.

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

    Thank you Scott...so much.

I have changed to click energy 3 this afternoon....do i also need to get a new meter fitted....? that only shows 1 reading ?

funny they sent me a letter this morning saying that i will be pleased to hear that they have dropped there prices yet again...but that it may take some time for my account to sort it self out due to me either useing more electricity or not paying enough .... nothing about that fact they rasied the prices so high and that i was on economy 7.....not 1 single statement i have says i was on ecenomy 7...how was i supposed to know.....if i am struggling with all this then i hate to think how pensioner would manage to understand it all.

thanks again...youve been more helpful than i can say. x

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

    Oh My!!

We are having EXACTLY the same problem! To cut a very long story short.....

We came back to BG in january 2006. We have an economy 7 meter (day and night readings) told them we wanted a standard meter fitted and they said no! Said they didnt have to change the meter they just converted the readings to standard. Started paying £22.50 per month by direct debit in april, then a few months later they wrote and said this wasn't enough and we're upping the payment to £67 a month. We phoned BG and they said don't worry its a blip and the DD will stay at £22.50, it didn't it went up to £67 but we didn't worry too much as we thought come winter we'll be in credit to cover it.

In march this year we got a bill for almost £800 saying we needed to pay this within 10 days and the DD was going up to £170 a month!

We phoned again, they said oh we're still charging you at economy 7 rates, cancel your dd until we've sorted it as it will automatically go up as its computer generated! THEY cancelled the dd, and we got a revised bill about 3 weeks later.

The revised bill was for even more money... almost £1000 and STILL on economy 7 rates. Also some periods we were charged double!

We've since had 3 more revised bills (4 in total) all wrong... and made numerous phone calls to BG, spoken to managers, debt dept, call centre staff... everyone!   explained some periods they've charged double for, they haven't got the right amounts of payments we've made to them on, wrong tarriffs etc... We got hold of price charges for 2006 and 2007 and worked it all out, out bill should have been about £370. We phoned again, and were told theres nothing they can do as they could send another revised bill but it'd be wrong so whats the point. They told us to write to the complaints dept in Southampton.

We wrote to Southampton and enclosed copies of every bill and revised bill and also of our workings out etc. They received the letter on the 20th June 2007 (sent recorded).

We received a red bill a couple days after, phoned BG and they said to ignore it, they know we're in the process of the complaints procedure. Last week we got a "nasty" latter saying pay now or we'll disconnect. Phoned BG again and they said ignore it, the letters are computer generated and they will send us a payment card so we can pay little and often (£10 a month!), "fool the computer" as it will see payments being made and stop sending the red bills.

We still haven't received the payment card even though we keep requesting it!

Yesterday we received a letter to say they are starting legal action against us as the newest "estimated" revised bill is now just under £1200. and they are coming on the 24th july to disconnect the electricity.

We phoned BG AGAIN and after explaining the whole saga AGAIN they've said nothing will happen and they've put a block on our account so we shouldnt get any more letters until this is resolved by the complaints people in Southampton.

    We'll see.

They are NOT coming into our house, We have 3 children, 2 who are disabled, they are NOT getting in here! If they bring a police officer we WILL let him/her enter and explain everything and show them the letters etc and if necessary ring BG again whilst the police are here.

And all through this they are still refusing to change the meter to a standard one!

My advise that I've picked up along the way...

a normal 3 bed house should use no more that 20KWH of electric a day.

Check your bills... if the figures don't seem right, then they probably aren't.

Don't trust that because they're a big company that they are right and you are wrong. Challenge the bill if you think its wrong and if you're still not happy, write to their complaints dept.

Also.... BG are absolutely the worst company we've ever dealt with. The call centre staff are either rude, don't know what to do, or just put you on hold and hang up.

When this is resolved we're sending them a bill for our phone calls to them, and also for loss of time and stress on ourselves. We'll also be changing to a different supplier.

Nailstyle, if you're still around, please get in touch with me...  I think I might be able to help you!

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

    nailstyle,

Happy to help and that's good that you're now on the cheapest product in the market.

However, you still need to change away from the Economy 7 meter. This is what will sting you financially. Speak to British Gas and ask that they change this over asap. If you have any problems doing this then please let me know.

    vampwthaheart,

That's shocking. Did you contact energywatch about this?

If you haven't already done so then I'd advise you contact them and inform them of your situation.

I've just left a message with British Gas to call me regarding this issue. I will let you know the outcome.

Re: very high electricty bill and debts

Thanks Scott.. although I 'm sure you'll understand that I'm not holding my breath! lol

We'll get in touch with Energywatch on monday morning.

Also we were told that BG complaints dept take about 10 weeks to investigate a complaint... surely this isn't acceptable? I do understand that there are thousands of complaints that BG are dealing with at the moment, but thats not my problem is it!?

Well I'll check back soon as I'm going to my dads for a stress free weekend lol

    Thank you.
