I am thinking of putting a lump sum into a Saga 12 month fixed rate bond to generate a monthly income. I would appreciate any opinions on Saga from people who are already with them.

I am not with them but I am with Birmingham Midshires subsidiary of HBOS where BoS which is the 'deposit taker' for Saga. See Saga's website.
