Rushed into Buying - Stuck with High Insurance?

Hello fellow users. I've never used one of these forums before, but hopefully if I do something wrong, someone will be able to correct me.

Im 19 at the moment (20 this year) and I am in my 1st year of Uni. Inititally I didn't think I would need a car having secured accomodation at uni (Aberdeen) but having had some problems, I decided to move into private accomodation. I ended up going for a place about ~30mins away from the campus. With alot of bus catching ect, I went and bought a car. I was going to go for something small (207 etc) but decided not to waste the money (as I will only need to get a new one later) so I got a X5 (BMW). The car is perfect, it's just getting insurance on it to drive.

I have checked with a few insurers and alot of them (the ones alot of my mates are with) won't even consider me, because of the car value (£60,000). I have a full license and have had for 2 years now. I have previously been insured on my sisters car (as a third party) for two years (if that helps).

    I have tried the "quoter" but some of them are *ouch*;

    Endsleigh - £6727.32 (Premium) - £1000 Excess - £570 per Month - Fully Comp.

Are there any insurers for younger drivers that have things alot less ^^ that much? I wasn't anticipating it to be this high! Also, roughly how cheaper would it be for me to add my sister to the insurance as the main driver and then me as a third party (again?).. However, if I drive on hers, I take it I won't get my own "No-Claims" so I will be back in the same circle..

Thanks for any tips and suggestions.

    Welcome to the nut-house!

You have just bought one of the most expensive 4 x 4s in the business and you are now worrying about the insurance. ANY X5 is going to cost you a packet to insure and with your age I am surprised that anyone is quoting you at all. You may find a cheaper quote from BMW themselves, but quite frankly I would be very surprised. The other way may be to use a pay-as-you-drive policy from someone like Norwich Union.

If you are the main user of the vehicle, you cannot - legally - insure the vehicle in someone else's name in order to gain cheaper premiums. This is called "fronting" and is a form of fraud, so please don't do it.

Google "BMW Insurance" to get a specialist broker.

    SHARK!

30 miles outside Aberdeen? Must be nearer Inverness or Dundee than Aberdeen...! Why so far away?

BMW X5! Price range from £39995 - £53860 I think you were done! You would be cheaper buying a Porsche Cayenne!

You will have no NCB, If you have to pay that much for insurance, you would be cheaper buying a property in Aberdeen.....

On another note. If you can afford the car then you can afford the £450 Road tax...... and the insurance too........and the petrol at £120 per week.......yes?

That is my tips and suggestions......... Any one else?

    Just food for thought!

Re: Rushed into Buying - Stuck with High Insurance?

    Hi Shark!

Thanks ever so much for your fast reply. The X5 has been a car I have wanted since I started learning to drive and when you have your heart set on something, you don't stop till you get it. I guess in this case I overlooked alot and should have slowed down.

Its not so much I can't afford the insurance, its just quite high :o, Out of the £22k I get for studying ~30% on insurance is pretty high amount compared to an average of ~2% everyone else I know is spending. I guess I will have to live with it.. or put the car aside for a smaller one :(

The Pay-as-You-Drive sounds like a really good idea, but I guess I will have to say the value of the car is £50,000 to be accepted (£10k down- I guess if I did, that is fraud of somesort). I guess I won't be able to add my sister to the insurance, (as she lives nowhere near to be able to drive it).

Re: Rushed into Buying - Stuck with High Insurance?

    Hi K,

Obviously the insurance is going to be expensive on this car, there is no way around that, but if you shop around you should be able to find one cheaper than what you have already been quoted. I have heard good things about Adrian Flux, who specialise in insurance for younger drivers with high performance cars etc..However, when I got a quote with them (I drive a new bmw too, although it is only a 2 litre), they were not very competitive. You might want to give them a call though as a lot of people recommend them.

I am insured with Tesco who are excellent and gave me the cheapest quote by far, although you have to be 21 for these type of cars unfortunately.

If I was you I would check out elephant.co.uk, bell.co.uk and admiral (all the same company but all give different quotes, so it's worth checking them all). Put the policy in your name because you are the main driver, and add your sister (or someone older with a lot of driving history) as an additional driver, and the price should go right down. The more named drivers you have on it the cheaper it normally is (providing they are experienced). I used to have my mum and dad on and it reduced the premium by about half the price. This will only work with the companies I have mentioned, and possibly Norwich Union. They also do 10 month bonus accelerator policies, where you gain a full years no claims after 10 months.

    Good luck.

Re: Rushed into Buying - Stuck with High Insurance?

Hi, its literally on the border of Aberdeen. Why so far away, I guess I was picky too on where I wanted to live (I bet I sound like a right anoying tw*t).

It was actually £60,800 with all the extras from BWM, I doubt BWM would con me? As for the roadtax, I get that under a bursary (paid by the university as it was an internal issue, which meant I couldn't stay on uni accomodation). My petrol is paid by the NHS (I guess you guys pay that under taxes or something right..?).

Thanks for your comments also Mr Big.

Re: Rushed into Buying - Stuck with High Insurance?

I knew it was going to be high too. I just didn't anticipated it to be this high. I have saved the details for Adrian Flux and will give them a call. Their online quoter doesn't seems to be taking my details :(

At the moment, I am thinking of putting the car into a garage and just getting a smaller 207 or something and gain some NCB and possibly bring it out in a year or twos time.

I have checked Elephant and Bell both come back as "Can't insure as the value is too high" and Admiral won't accept and say "More details needed" so I have to give them a call too.

I guess I couldn't put my sisters name (as the previous poster says, I could get my insurance invalidated), I know the neighbour (who is also a student) is looking for a car, I guess if I could get him to join mine I could possibly get it cheaper and that way he could drive it himself (I drive him to most places anyway).

The "10 Months Bonus" sounds good too. I guess if I do get a smaller car for now, the faster I can get my NCB to try again.

Thanks for your fast reply also Lili24.

The engine size is a 4.8. If that helps (or in this case, wont lol).

Ahh, that's a shame. Don't give up yet though, there are lots of companies to try, and as mentioned BMW themselves.

If this is for real,my advice would be to sell the car. Engage brain and start again. How could you possibly afford this venture? Why did you need such a high powered performance car?

What are you studying? Please tell me not finance.

4.8..Oh dear! My OH had a 3.0i and the amount of fuel it used was errr...somethin else! You must have more money than sense my friend. I agree that locking it away in the garage for years is a daft idea..can you not take it back to BMW and get something else?

Re: Rushed into Buying - Stuck with High Insurance?

I am studying Medicine and Psychology. (I could do with my own brain testing now *sigh*). Yes, this is for real. Why does it seem surreal?

How could I afford this venture, well, I have been saving since I was 16 like mad and also, my parental fund opened up at 18 together with that I was able to afford it.

Why do I need such a high performance car? I wouldn't say I needed it, more I wanted it. I am sure you have (in life) wanted something so bad and would have done anything for it. I guess this was mine.

I don't want to sell it :( It's my first car (and im sure you could possibly relate) and its something that you picked yourself and everything.. and you wouldn't want to get rid of it, because of a little hurdle :(

Re: Rushed into Buying - Stuck with High Insurance?

I won't have much an issue with fuel, I will only be using it (on a day to day basis) for an hour max. The longest of journeys will only be in the summer (end of semesters etc) when I will be going back home (Central England).

My parents have too told me to give it back, but when you have spent so much time saving waiting for something, its something you don't want to return. I am thinking of giving it to my sister (her insuring it will cost her only just under £2000) for the two years to keep it in action until I can sort something out :(
