Procedure for switching from prepayment meters

The property we've just purchased is fitted with prepayment meters for both the gas and electricity ... we believe this was due to a previous occupier having a poor credit rating. My partner and I have always paid our utility bills by direct debit to get the best rates. Do we have to now go onto a prepayment scheme or can we insist on normal meters being fitted? Would we have to use EDF (who installed the prepayment meters)?. Would there be any cost involved to change? Many thanks!

You can insist on the change. If the supplier refuses, you can contact energywatch. I believe that some suppliers have started charging for the change.

    MrsH,

The provider should change this free of charge but please can you post a response to say how you got on and whether there was any charge for changing meter. This will be very useful for other readers.

Energywatch Tel: 08459 06 07 08 - should you have any issues with the provider.

    Good luck!

    Update as requested!

I initially spoke to the current supplier of the new property who 'would be very happy to replace both meters at a cost of £50 each'! No way! I then decided to approach the supplier who we were just about to close our account with at the previous property ... I wanted to see if loyalty counted for anything and, lo and behold, it did! They (Atlantic) are going to switch us over to normal credit meters within two weeks of us switching over to them, at no cost to us whatsoever! We're very happy customers indeed :)

    MrsH,

    Excellent news.

Atlantic are part of Scottish & Southern and are renowned for their market leading customer service. A scan of energywatch complaint figures backs this up. http://www.energywatch.org.uk/help_and_advice/supplier_performance/
