New 7.01% 1 year fixed rate with Icesave

Icesave has the best rates for 1 year fixed rate accounts now at 7.01%. The credit crunch keeps getting better for savers, isn't it?

Yes, a good time to be a saver indeed. Base rate going down and savings rates going up.

Their 6 month bond at 6.75% is also quite attractive.

    Axisme,

Birmingham Midshires do two 6 month bonds that pay 6.87% - slightly more 'interesting'!

Does anyone know if Icesave is regulated by the FSA (ie would you be covered up to 35k as with UK banks)?

I saw an interesting news clip on CNN this morning, explaining the fragility of the Icelandic economy. Just be careful. Don't put in more than 35k is my advice.

Yeah, I always find those stories funny. The only banks to get in trouble are American, British and European, yet it's the Icelandic economy people should be worried about ;-)

A lot of this was big hedge funds trying to profit from bringing down the Icelandic banking system. They bet on them going bust or buy in when share are really down. Now the Credit defaults swops, which had risen sharply for the banks has now been greatly reduced. The currency which was over valued and dropped 25% has stablised and has made gains in recent days. You dont here our media reporting this though???

The papers in the UK would not dream of making such an assult to bring a UK bank down, northern rock brought itself down. There are many UK banks which are wobbly, which the UK papers and media could report on.

Landbankin will be releasing details of its performance for the 1st quarter of 2008 which will be interesting.
