    Named Drivers!

My wife has just recently passed her test and I have an Audi TT and the cheapest insurance quote was £3500. Does anybody have any idea of how much it would cost to put her on my insurance and if she had an accident would I lose all my no claims bonus?

    Re: Named Drivers!

Stedxxx -- It would certainly be cheaper to put her on your insurance if they will have her, I don't have a clue how much more ?  they will ask how long she has held a full licence for when you apply.

It's a very powerful car though for a new driver, and really think it safer and cheaper to let her get some experience in a less powerful car first, but it's down to yourselves.

Yes, if she has an accident in the Audi on your insurance, it will affect your NCD by the amount stated in the policy, unless you have it protected.

Might add, you can get a discount with a lot of insurers covering a second lower powered car yourself, with your wife a named driver on the policy, it's cheaper when they are your spouse.

    Re: Named Drivers!

What was the £3500 quote? For her alone to drive your car? If you want her to drive it the only sensible option is as a named driver, but it sounds an expensive route to take until she gains some experience.Use the MS search engine to see what's the best deal. I agree with CK,regarding safety. Those TT's are raucous beasts but I wouldn't want to risk an inexperienced driver with one.

    Re: Named Drivers!

congratulations on your wife passing her test.insurance is always dearer for new drivers as they are more likely to have an accident.best advice i can give is do lots of price comparision sites to get the best deal or get her a cheap little run around to start with.i first started with an 1987 vw polo coupe.my husband and i both passed our tests within 9 days of each other.cheapest quuote for first year was £500 for 2 newly passed drivers 3rd party driving a 1.1l polo.thank god it has come down since then after 4 years!!

    Re: Named Drivers!

    Sted,

As a rough rule of thumb, you lose 2 years NCD for each accident/claim

The NCD usually works out as follows:

Full (5years): 65% (unless over 50, and then you get 70%)

    4 years: 60%

    3 years: 50%

    2 years: 40%

    1 year 30%

Introductory bonus = 20%-30% (age/experience dependent) and this assumes they company doesnt honour named driver NCD.

Hopefully the above will give you an indication of what you might have to pay extra should she have an accident.

Re: Named Drivers and part-time car insurance

    hi there,

We want to put our 17 yr old son on our car insurance policy (we drive a Renault Megane), but the quotes we've had are around £1000.  Is there a company which will give us a cheaper quote for him if he drives only during school holidays?

    thanks,

    sjepcroft

Not sure (unlikely, and if anybody does it will probably have to be via a broker) - but you could add him at the beginning of the holidays and remove him at the end of the holidays.  Given that their will probably be an admin fee of circa £25 each time, this will probably only be feasible for the summer break.
