I have received a letter from mercron credit repair stating that they can repair my credit score for £68 and get rid of all the black marks against me, is this just one big con or are there actually companys out there who can do this for a fee

I don't know, but if £68 is your cash to feed the family for a week, or do this, I'd say buy the food.

On the other hand, of you've got a bad credit rating and £68 to spend doing this or going to the pub...

I would check them out as well as you can - I've just found this on google, with apologies to Moneysupermarket if this goes against terms of use

     www.thisismoney.co.uk/consumer/article.html?in_article_id=387123&in_page_id=5&in_a_source=

which suggests that they can fix errors, but not correct entries.

If all they can do is fix errors, then with a few letters you can do this yourself.  Just get the your credit reports sent to you, included will be infomation on how to correct mistakes (if any), which usually just means writing and demonstrating that the the mistakes are not you.

I have also received the same letter. Sounds too good to be true so it probably is. Must admit I'm a bit suspitious of this as I can't find a website on them although they are a Ltd company registered on Companies house and do file accounts regularly. They claim in their letter to deal with over 25000 cases a year so why no website???

I am also an underwriter for a finance company and am a bit bemused as how they will fullfill their promises. When you take out any kind of credit, there is a section on the form advising your information will be shared with other lenders by means of credit reference agencies(or words to this effect). By signing the form you are giving the finance company permission to share your details.

I would suggest you take the letter to your local Citizens Advise Bureux to see what they say or do some research on the Consumer Credit Act and Data protection act yourself 1st.

You could always call them to see how much info they're willing to give before you part with your money. I would also ask them how they came across your details.
