Made a claim but never advised how much total was from insurer?

Not sure what to do here. We made a claim for water damage in September 2006 after our water tank burst, soaking the bedroom and bringing the ceiling down etc. Although we saw bills totalling around £1400 we were never made aware by the insurer (Barclays) of what the total was or how it was split over contents/buildings.

We took out a renewal through the Post Office last year when this was all a bit fresher in the memory etc. No more claims have been made and the 2008 renewal has come round. Basically things are a bit more in the past and the questions over claims and values are harder to answer in confidence.

The question is simply how important is it to be precise on these matters to get a sound policy that won't be wriggled out of in the event of a claim and gets the best price? I thought the industry had a record of all claims that it could check out anyway?

    Can anyone help?

Hi..you can work out yourself from the bills if you wish as all non fitted items would be claimed under the contents side. Carpets, bedding, clothing for example. Items such as the tank ceilings, floorboards and decorating are covered under the buildings insurance. I am sure that there must be some form of accounting from the insurer should you ring them.
