Is Skype too good to be true?

With the advent now of Skype's subscription packages where for instance you get unlimited calls to other phones and mobiles anywhere in the world from only £2.24 per month (for UK calls) and other benefits. All you need basically is a broadband connection, it's getting debatable now how much of a phone service you need apart from a mobile to dial 999 or in the event of a powercut. This surely is going to hit the telephone/ broadband suppliers hard - but is it too good to be true?

Re: Is Skype too good to be true?

When these services first started I was overseas and the local phone company used to block each service as they found out about it. That was in the days of 56k connections. The calls used to echo, sometimes only one side of the conversation would go down the wire, sometimes the calls would disconnect but they used to cost a few pence per minute rather than a few pounds to call home so no one grumbled. Things have improved since then.

If you think about it, you can use your computer to call any other computer anywhere in the world for the cost of your connection. When calling a phone, there's only really a little bit of extra cabling to use.

It's a good deal. I'm not sure if Skype is the best around but you should certainly try some of the services and see what you think of them.

    Good day Stageman

    Good day Stageman!

Wow! That’s good news, and I’ve heard Skype is very clear when you use the headset and when you call through cell then it’s clear also.

Skype is too good to be use.

    Best wishes to everyone,

    Stephania

Re: Is Skype too good to be true?

I have been using skype for more than 6 months, on my laptop, all around South East Asia, calling landlines and mobiles worldwide - a most excellent service in my opinion, and cheap as well.

The answer is yes, the telco companies have a lot to worry about, specially when WiFi gets more efficient, and there will no longer be the need for landlines. It's the future. And it's going to happen soon.

Re: Is Skype too good to be true?

what is Skype? How does it work and how do you get it? - It is one of several services that allows you to speak to and (with a video cam) see anyone with an internet connection anywhere in the world. You just need a £5 headset (usually better than a microphone and speakers), some free software and, with most providers, computer-to-computer calls cost no more than the cost of the internet connections. Some services let you also call from computer-to-phone for a per minute charge (generally a lot less than phone-to-phone charges).

If you've ever swapped emails with a friend who is online, a chat site is one step up on this and something like Skype takes this to linking voice and video as well. If you've got friends or relatives overseas, you'll wonder how you managed without it.

    You have been quiet!

Did you check out the site and what do you think to it now?

I understand from press reports etc that business for Skype has boomed after the announcement of the new fixed rates.
