    INSURANCE CLAIM

I made a claim on my insurance to replace my front seat passenger window as someone had smashed it overnight.

When I complete the form on your website and it asks what sort of claim I have made, would this be a vandalism claim or a windscreen/window claim?

Good question, although it's definitely not a windscreen claim! The answer will depend on the underwriter and their definition. After completing the quotes you should refer to an agent on the telephone to ask for their opinion on the matter. They may already have some flexibility in making that decision although it would probably be best to call in working hours so that they can get the matter clarified if needsbe.

My answer would be 'Vandalism' as someone deliberately smashed it. If you knew the person, I would say 'Malicious Damage'.

Get speaking to those over the phone!

Yep, go for vandalism on the onlone comparison sites but liek Vic says, best to ring through to buy the policy and check with them.

Vic, the advice you give often says to check with the insurer which is sound advice but I just thought, what if you bought from Swiftcover? You can't check with them as they are online only, so can they ever refuse to pay out in a case like Cuns mentions where they might not agree that its a vandalism claim?

    Hi Joe,

Very good question there! Don't get me started on this company lol! There should always be a contact number offered irrespective of whether the policy must be incepted online only. Unfortunately this company fail to meet any form of average or high expectation, especially when it comes to efficient customer service and making a claim.

In the case of Cuns, most insurers would classify this as Vandalism/Malicious damage, and certainly not Windscreen as it relates to the passenger window which was deliberately put through or with at least some dishonesty as no details were left. If the customer put 'Windscreen', Swift could challenge this and probably would after checking the CUE for any mismatches.

Interestingly enough, the load for Vandalism/Malicious is identical for the majority of insurers but some companies choose not to quote at all for Malicious damage claims. This area needs some clarification from the likes of Swiftcover and other online only insurers.

Finally, whilst we're on the topic, it's also worth noting that if you claim for windscreen damage with Swiftcover the No Claims Bonus is frozen and the customer will no longer be eligible for any increase in the NCD at the policy renewal date!
