When I called one of the companies and was upfront about the previous problems getting cover they then asked if I was within 400m of water and then said they could not ensure - when I asked why they did not as this on website they did not know and basically admitted if I had not phoned them but just taken up quote then they would have had to honour cover.
This seems to be a problem with the data collaboration and validation. It should automatically decline or refer you to the insurer if you answered yes to this question. This is why it is imperative that quotes are confirmed over the telephone and NOT just bought online. The person you spoke to over the telephone was incorrect. If you had purchased the cover online, and this area was highlighted to the underwriter, your policy would have been cancelled and refunded in full giving you 7 days notice. Whilst most questioned are asked and answered honestly, sometimes the data is not as accurate/sufficient as to the insurer's requirements.
My question is basically - as long as I am honest in answering the questions that are put on the websites should I assume that the cover will be fine ? All these companies have access to the Environment Agency data that shows our house is in a risk area (although has never flooded) so am I being over cautious in not yet switching ?
Absolutely not, and you will be wasting your efforts as the risk will automatically flag up with an underwriter should it fall outside their perimeter.
Unsurprisingly my broker recommends sticking with current insurer and says that when they contact the companies I mention with lower quotes they are told they will not provide cover.
They probably won't, but it's worth checking them out.
