    Extended warranty - vacuum cleaner

Good morning, seeking your advice please.

I purchased a Hoover vacuum cleaner from Comet (with their extended warranty) in June 2006.  In May 2007, the motor went and Comet repaired it.  In September, it 'died' on me (no power at all).  Again, I took it to Comet for repairs.  They have had it since mid-September awaiting spare parts.  I am not pleased to say the least as my previous vacuum cleaner (also a Hoover) went 15 years with only 1 fault (hose needed replacing).  If I they are unable to repair my hoover in the next few weeks, what recourse will I have with regards to a a refund/exchange?

Thanks for any advice you are able to offer.

Hi --- You may like to read the article below in conjunction with my opinion that Comet in this case, have to repair the cleaner within a reasonable time, and in fact you do still have rights under the "sale of goods act" for a period of up to six years from the date of purchase, which is nothing to do with the extra protection the extended warranty offers or the manufacturers guarantee.

If after a reasonable time which it seems they have already had, they must offer a replacement or a refund if they are unable to offer the repair.

Hello, thanks so much for your informative response and detailed article on this.  This is really an eye opener.  I am convinced that goods today just aren't built to last.  I have always purchased extended warranties (sometimes for as little as £10 for an expensive iron) as you know that the item will be repaired/replaced if it goes wrong.  You are right, 6 weeks is unreasonable and all they keep saying is that they will call me when the parts come in.  I will be calling the head office this week.

Thanks again for your advice.  I am sure that this will be helpful to other readers.

    Regards,

    London
