Me neither, but it sounds pretty straightforward:

Put whatever you can into ISAs first. Split the rest across different banks. Go for bonds and easy access accounts.

don't forget you can put 30k into premium bonds, money is safe plus 30 thousand chances every month of winning £ 50 to £1, ooo, ooo...

Premium bonds pay low interest though. National Savings and Investments, for example, will pay 3.4% gross only (2.78% net). The difference in interest on 30K works out to be quite a lot.

    Re: 100k+ to invest

winnings on premium bonds are tax free. i agree one could get a higher interest but the 30k is safe which with average luck could produce winnings equal to high interest accounts. plus there's still 70k to invest.

    Re: 100k+ to invest

On 30K, the difference in interest could be about 2% (say 4.8% net on a 6% account, vs 2.78% in Premium Bonds.)

I don't know if I would waste 600 pounds a year playing the lottery.

    Re: 100k+ to invest

i certainly see your points and understand your maths forumfan, but every one has has different aims. in my case i am late 60's financially comfortable so i would be happy to gamble 30k. i invested 30k in premium bonds 4 years ago and have won £3,400 which has paid for each years holiday abroad. just as a point of interest could you work out for me (i am useless at maths) what i could have made had i invested in a high interest account ?

    Re: 100k+ to invest

Ronbobby, can you send me some of your luck! I've had 30k in ERNIE for the last 6 months and all I've won is a miserly £100, £50 and £50. Luckily, like you I am also 'comfortable' - and your point is quite correct, this type of account is really a gamble, and not for serious savers who really need an income from savings.

hang on in there, trust me the odds are 23000 to 1 you will find winnings comes in in spurts, my biggest win £200 but i've had 5 x £50 in one month.

Ronbobby you've made a good percentage return on your money, but not everyone is lucky, as we've seen. The chances of winning are 1 in 22000, and not everyone has 30K to gamble!
