Will try that again, most insurance comapnies will not punish you in relation to insurance for crimnal convictions.

However if the convictions are for theft or fraud you may struggle.

I would reccomend www.bestdealinsurance.co.uk/ they are very competitive and helpful.

    Hi

I have found that nearly every insurance company will punish you if you have someone living with you that has a criminal conviction.  I held contents insurance for 10 years and have never made a claim, but when my partner moved in they would not renew my policy.  I spent days calling other Insurance companies and no-one would underwrite a policy.  I eventually got a price through www.deliteinsurance.co.uk  If the conviction is Fraud or Arson you will struggle.

If someone moved in with me, and had an Arson or Fraud conviction, they would be straight out the door anyway!

I'm glad to see Insurers punishing those with such convictions, and it makes sense to also!

I agree about arson and fraud, and would have agreed about not letting anyone with serious convictions getting insurance - or at least not without having to pay through the nose for it - but I have changed my mind now that my daughter is in a similar position.  When she was 18, she was suffering from serious depression following the sudden death of her father.  She went out clubbing and, on a mixture of antidepressants and excess alcohol, hit someone who was laughing at her distraught state - 3 feet from a policeman!!  She was later convicted of Assault and Battery.  She has now, thankfully, got through her depression, has a lovely baby and is a fantastic mum but she cannot get house insurance, which is not exactly helping her in her new Life. Why should she now be vulnerable to accidents/damage/burglary etc costs because she cannot get insurance?  Ok, her premium should perhaps be a little higher than most but not to be able to get any at all is unreasonable.

    Hi Wendy,

Yes, this I can sympathise with. This kind of situation needs to be referred to an underwriter.

When you describe this, you make it sound like this was some time ago. This is good. When you speak to insurers/brokers about getting a quote, you can ask them to refer this to the underwriter and explain the situation fully. I guarantee one will accept her circumstances and not load on the premium for it.

I have done this many times. Get quoting, get calling and ask them to refer to the U/W on her behalf and get them to contact you!!

    Your daughter is NOT uninsurable!

If you have 'unspent' convictions you will find it almost impossible to get insurance from the mainstream companies. You certainly shouldn't use automatic quote searches on the web as they will not be able to take into account your personal circumstances.

There is a charity called UNLOCK that represents reformed offenders who have turned their lives around. They put their members in touch with a whole list of insurance brokers and advise people on which brokers accept which kind of convictions. Their website is www.unlock.org.uk
