Re: openning a new bank account with bad credit

But say you get laid off & go without pay for a month. You realise you have a couple of dds' & cheques knocked back. You would end up paying nearly the same amount in charges then you would for a year of £12.50. Fair do, I would still have to find money for the bills but I wouldn't have all the bank charges.

I am happy to pay £12.50 pm if it means not getting bank charges of any thing from £25 up to £100, you also get that personal touch of someone sorting your finances out.

Lat week I rang them& they rearranged most of my salary to cover all of my bills etc & to take £25 out of the normal £150 I get every week, that will cover me for everything & I am now about £100 per week better off.

Yesterday, for example, I rang them up as the are holding back £140 of my wages for dds' that are due to go out on a weekly basis, I said I needed money for something & within the minute they had transferred the moneyover.

Slightly confused, are you being negative about the 'Gold Mastercard' or the 'Mastercard Prime' prepaid card? I'm looking into getting a Prime card, mainly for online purchases costing not much more than £40.

    Re: Prepaid Credit Cards:

I dont know if anyone else have had any dealings with Prime Card Mastercard, its a Mastercard, and it purchased for the measley price of £3.00, available from most retail outlets displaying the PayPoint Logo. I got one no problems at all, and if approved for just a further £2.95 you can upgrade it, so you can withdraw cash from ATM's etc, plus shop online, pay bills online etc.,

Its just a case of topping it up as you would a pay as you go mobile phone, its not a credit-card so you can only spend what you load onto it, may be worth having a look for someone wanting a Mastercard..

Hope this may help people in a same situation as myself, turned down by Co-operative Bank, and no chance of even a basic account without a debit card from any Bank associated with Royal Bank of Scotland ( Natwest being one of them)

Seems a lot of the big Banks are affiliated to Royal Bank of Scotland, so from personal experience they are not worth a carrot if you are in receipt of State Benefits and have any adverse Credit History!!

    Regards

I am also looking into getting a Mastercard Prime and I just need to know whether there are any 'hidden charges' you are aware of? I'm aware of the transaction fee (50p to £1, which is fine), the reload fee (2% of what you reload) and the dormancy fee (£2.95 if you don't spend at least once a month from the card). All of these conditions are ok by me, as a) I'm using it mainly online, so even taking the small transaction fee into account, I'd still save a lot over buying in stores, b) I'd most likely only load what I need onto the card at any one time and then make my purchase and c) I easily buy more than one DVD/Game/CD or whatever each month!

For example, if you have no balance on your card and you get a dormancy fee of £2.95, does this come off your card the next time you have sufficient money on it, or is the money 'requested' another way?

I haven't got a valid passport currently, or any utility bills in my name as I don't own the house and my phone is pay as you go! Will I need either of these if I want to upgrade the Prime card to reloadable?

    Thanks for any help.

    Re: Less Than Perfect.co.uk

Have you tried looking at their website? They should have all that info there, in some kind of FAQ.

Btw, I cannot recommend the Aqua Credit Card enough. I know that their rate is quite high, but not only I got it when I applied for it (despite my credit being REALLY bad), but I was given £1000 starting credit limit and now, 3 months later, they increased it to £1500 without me even asking!

Try the Easycash with Halifax or Bank of Scotland. They give you an electron debit card and direct debit facilities. They are usually quite easy to get. Good luck :)

Re: openning a new bank account with bad credit

I think anything to do with current accounts, and the High Street Banks, ie., Royal Bank of Scotland (natwest) Lloyds/TSB, Barclays, HSBC, plus many online Banks are a total No go area if you have either a bad credit score, or in Receipt of State Benefits.

The only 'standard' account i have managed to aquire is Alliance & Leicester, able to service at the Post Offices, can do Direct Debits, view balance online, NO DEBIT CARD OR CHEQUE BOOK, but you do get an ATM Card.

I think all major banks are very heartless when it comes to bad credit, if they gave you a second chance with a Debit Card.. NOT a Credit Card, and no overdraft facilities, it would make life much more bearable for people with disabilities...obviously they dont care, the all pay pitiful interest and rip people off even when in Credit!!

    RIP-OFF BRITAIN ONCE AGAIN!!!

Re: openning a new bank account with bad credit

Hi there, i'm new to posting here but have been reading postings for a while. I've got a not so great credit history from the past and have recently found it really hard finding a new bank account with debit card facilities. I tried Natwest Step, nothing, I tried Abbey National, nothing, I tried Nationwide, nothing! The list is endless! I was offered basic accounts with no debit card and very nearly took one, until Halifax came back with an acceptance!!! horay! Visa Electron card on it's way and everything! they have been fantastic, taken about 1 wk to open. I think they understand that people who have debts and problem credit history are not bad people and shouldn't be deprived of decent banking facilities. They really have given me light at the end of a very long tunnel. Currently with Lloyds but have just had enough of the shoddy customer service and "mistakenly" taking money from my account for a charge that was actually for someone else - they took it from my account instead of some other persons and then refused to give me it back as they are "in court" regarding bank charges!! not very good, i complained to the ombudsman and got MY money back eventually, but they have been horrible, it was their mistake not mine, i've operated my account in a pristine way over the years but after this i decided enough was enough.

In short, try Halifax Easycash, they accepted me no probs, also applied for Citibank who have accepted me but i'm tempted to stay with Halifax due to location of branches etc

Hope it helps let people know there is light at the end of the tunnel!
